Creature Commandos Season 2 Will Officially Bring Back 2 DCU Characters from Live-Action

A second season of Creature Commandos is happening, and it will feature some familiar faces from the DC Universe. While Superman kicked off James Gunn’s DCU in theaters, Creature Commandos was the first series to launch the shared universe on HBO Max. The show introduced Task Force M – a team of imprisoned monsters recruited by Amanda Waller and led by Rick Flag Sr. for top-secret missions. The original team includes Rick Flag Sr., The Bride, Weasel, Dr. Phosphorus, G.I. Robot, and Nina Mazursky.

As the season went on, Task Force M took heavy losses with the destruction of G.I. Robot and the death of Nina Mazursky. Despite this, the season finale hinted at their return, and they’re expected to make a big comeback thanks to some major upgrades to the team.

Seven characters are confirmed to return for Season 2 of Creature Commandos. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and a writer for the show, recently told Rotten Tomatoes that the new season will feature seven returning characters. Notably, three of these characters have already been seen in live-action DC Universe movies and related projects.

In the upcoming season of Creature Commandos, Task Force M will feature a revamped team including The Bride, Doctor Phosphorus, Weasel (previously seen in The Suicide Squad), and a redesigned G.I. Robot with heavier armor.

In addition to the main characters, the show’s second season will introduce several new faces, like Nosferata, a creature who is part vampire bat and part human, Khalis, a mummy, and King Shark, who appeared in the 2021 movie The Suicide Squad.

Gunn also reflected on including a mummy in Creature Commandos Season 2:

We’re currently working on a mummy for a project. I’m curious about the process of creating one, as I haven’t really focused on mummies before. I’ve always preferred werewolves, personally.

After the events of Season One, it’s pretty clear that The Bride is stepping up to be the leader of this new Creature Commandos team. She’s definitely taking charge, and I think it’s a smart move for the show’s direction.

In a January 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Indira Varma, the voice of The Bride, expressed her excitement about delving deeper into her character’s development in Season 2. She also mentioned the interesting dynamic of her character’s unreturned feelings for Eric Franksentein, played by David Harbour.

I doubt it will, but it would be interesting to see a story where someone’s unreturned love is eventually reciprocated. It could be a really compelling and heartfelt journey.

Varma hinted that in Season 2, The Bride might finally begin to heal from her past trauma, potentially making her a more balanced, but still formidable, character.

I think there’s a lot more development ahead for her, and what we’ve seen so far is just the beginning. We’re starting to see her personality emerge, and hints of a genuine emotional core. She’s on a path toward healing from her past and learning to look at life with a little more optimism.

Season 2 will likely focus more on the character Weasel (played by Sean Gunn). It was revealed in Season 1 that Weasel didn’t cause the fire that killed 27 children – he was actually trying to rescue them, but was falsely accused.

In January 2025, James Gunn assured a fan on BlueSky that Season 2 of the show would deliver “Justice for Weasel,” meaning the character will have a significant role.

“Well you’ll be happy to know we’re getting into Season 2 now.” #JusticeforWeasel

In Season 2 of Peacemaker, Rick Flag Sr. surprisingly became a villain by heading up the Salvation program at ARGUS and seemingly turning against people with superpowers. It’s currently unclear whether he’ll be involved in the next season of Creature Commandos and Task Force M’s work.

Frank Grillo has hinted that Rick Flag Sr. might return, as he’s mentioned hearing about plans for an animated series – suggesting his character could reappear.

James Gunn created Creature Commandos, featuring a talented cast including Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, Zoë Chao, David Harbour, and Frank Grillo. The first season of Creature Commandos debuted on HBO Max on December 5, 2024, and there’s currently no announced date for the release of Season 2.

Which Other DCU Characters Could Return in Creature Commandos Season 2?

Task Force M’s team includes both returning and new members, which promises to make Season 2 of Creature Commandos even better. We might also see some unexpected characters reappear in the new episodes.

David Harbour’s character, Eric Frankenstein, might be back for Season 2, particularly since Indira Varma hinted at his return. With Frankenstein’s story still unfolding, he’d be a valuable addition, and his interactions with the new leader of Task Force M, The Bride, could create interesting challenges on future missions.

Even though Nina Mazurky died in the emotional season finale of Creature Commandos, Zoë Chao hinted in an interview with TopMob that the character might return. She suggested this could happen through a full resurrection, or potentially through flashbacks or hallucinations in future episodes.
