I am deeply saddened by the news of Seth “Shifty Shellshock” Binzer’s untimely death due to an accidental drug overdose at the age of 49. I had the privilege of following Shifty’s musical journey with Crazy Town since their early days in Los Angeles, and his raw energy and talent were truly inspiring.
Seth Binzer, lead singer of Crazy Town, expressed a desire to overcome his drug addiction prior to his passing this week, as shared by his manager in a public announcement on Thursday about the cause of his death.
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: I regretfully confirm that Crazy Town co-founder and former reality TV star, Binzer, passed away due to an unintended drug overdose, according to People’s report. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the unfortunate incident, which occurred on Monday. Binzer was only 49 years old.
I’ve always found it unfortunate that Binzer struggled so much to overcome his addictions and achieve greater success, as expressed in Hubberman’s statement to People on Thursday.
He added: “We all tried, but ultimately, we all failed, or Shifty would still be here.”
In 1995, Crazy Town, the rap-rock band known for their 2000 hit “Butterfly,” was founded by Binzer and Bret “Epic” Mazur in Los Angeles. They parted ways in 2003 but reconnected and performed together again in 2007.
I, as a devoted moviegoer and follower of reality TV, can’t help but share that during the years 2008 to 2010, Binzer made a name for himself in this genre by being open about his personal battle with addiction. He bravely showed his journey towards recovery on popular shows like “Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew” and “Sober House.”
The Medical Examiner in Los Angeles County announced that Binzer passed away at his residence, but declined to share information about the cause of death due to the ongoing investigation. In contrast, Hubberman disclosed that Binzer’s demise resulted from a mix of prescribed medications and illegal drugs obtained from the streets.
“Hubberman shared with People that Shifty was a dear friend who desperately sought improvement, but unfortunately, none of us possessed the necessary tools to help him, not even I.”
Mazur expressed thoughts about Binzer’s ongoing struggle with addiction in a post on Facebook made on Tuesday.
Although he faced numerous challenges, Seth managed to spread immense joy and vitality among those around him, as Mazur noted. It’s deeply unfortunate that his story didn’t have a happier conclusion, but we can take comfort in believing that Seth has finally found the tranquility he longed for throughout his life.
The founding member of Crazy Town expressed: “His essence will persist through the music we created and in the hearts of those who cared for him deeply.”
In the year 2017, Mazur left behind Crazy Town. Binzer carried on with the band’s moniker, now known as Crazy Town X. Come February, they dropped a four-track Extended Play titled “Flirting With Disaster” for public consumption.
