Craig Revel Horwood insists Strictly professionals MUST be strict with celebrities as he shares fears show ill become ‘vanilla’ as he weighs in on ongoing crisis
As a seasoned observer and ardent fan of the dance world, I find myself deeply engrossed in the ongoing drama surrounding Strictly Come Dancing. Having spent my formative years immersed in the rigorous discipline of ballet, I can empathize with the evolving dynamics within this cherished show.
Craig Revel Horwood continues to express his thoughts on the persistent Strictly controversy, emphasizing that rigorous guidance is necessary for achieving superior outcomes from professional dancers.
For two decades, this judge, a long-standing member of the program, expressed his concerns about the show becoming overly bland if celebrities can’t handle constructive criticism. In simpler terms, he feels that without some degree of critique, the show might lose its zest or excitement.
In an interview with The Sun, the 59-year-old dancer and choreographer expressed her concerns: “I pray that the quality doesn’t dip this year. Even when I’m coaching casts for performances during rehearsals, I must maintain a firm hand. I believe it’s necessary.”
He went on to say, “It’s not something to shed tears over when asked to repeat an action. Instead, one should learn to accept constructive criticism. If we don’t, we might find ourselves in a world where nobody is ever criticized, resulting in a bland and watered-down society where no one dares to innovate.”
Speaking from his personal journey, he asserted that without constructive criticism, he wouldn’t have achieved the success he did in his dance career.
He explained: ‘I never would have made it without criticism. If my teachers hadn’t told me my arms were terrible, way too loose and wild and out of control, I would still be wild and out of control.’
In a conversation, Craig shared that touching his hamstring by his Russian ballet instructor was simply a method they used to guide the muscle into action, explaining its role.
He mentioned that, given similar training, many Strictly celebrities might consider suing. He believes that certain professional dancers require protection from their well-known partners during the show.
In January, the Strictly controversy arose when actress Amanda Abbington claimed that her dance partner, Giovanni Pernice, had been abusive towards her. This allegation came after she abruptly left the competition only five weeks into it.
Actress Amanda, who is 50 years old and played Sherlock, has levied a string of allegations against Giovanni concerning his teaching techniques, labeling his behavior as “unnecessarily harsh, abusive, cruel, and unkind.” However, Giovanni firmly refutes all these accusations.
In a recent conversation, I likened the intense atmosphere of the dance competition to the grueling conditions of a battlefield, confiding in Channel 4 News that the BBC producers were taken aback by footage that reportedly showcased questionable behavior with a sexual undertone. This allegation also included instances that left me feeling humiliated.
In July, the news broke out that Graziano Di Prima was dismissed from Strictly due to an incident where he allegedly acted aggressively towards his dance partner, Love Island alumna Zara McDermott, by kicking her.
For the show’s 20th anniversary series next month, neither Giovanni nor Graziano will be making a comeback since rehearsals are already in full swing.
Last week Craig revealed he wants the BBC’s findings from their investigation into misconduct claims on the show to be published quickly.
Giving his thoughts on the ongoing bullying crisis he admitted he thought the introduction of chaperones was ‘a good idea’.
Craig stated to The Times, “I’m eager for the investigation to unfold as it may turn out to be a minor issue or something more substantial. Nevertheless, we prefer the findings to come swiftly rather than delaying them.”
However, he continued by saying, “The BBC isn’t the only one, right? The BBC gets attention due to its public financing. ITV faces similar problems.”
Craig shared that a lot has altered since his dance training days, as instructors would often tap their legs for improved performance. He suggested that having monitors around could make everyone feel more secure.
He said: ‘All I can say is, first, chaperones are a good idea. Second, thank goodness things have changed.
I once had a ballet instructor, originally from Russia, who utilized a cane to help us extend our leg lifts further. Nowadays, such a teaching method might not be permissible.
A choreographer doesn’t physically adjust a dancer by touching their arm, instead relying on verbal instructions. However, this method ensures that all dancers feel secure and well-guided.
Nevertheless, even amidst the recent turmoil surrounding Strictly, Craig maintained his belief that the program could withstand the challenges it faced.
He said: ‘It’s a wonderful show that’s in 61 countries. Yes, I want to know the results of the investigation – let’s see what issues need addressing. But let’s also not forget the absolute joy it brings.’
Since then, Graziano has stated that he’s not fully aware of the details regarding the alleged actions.
The BBC won’t disclose more info because the situation where the data was obtained is confidential, and they have commitments towards other parties.
As a seasoned journalist who has covered many high-profile investigations into misconduct, I can understand Amanda’s frustration and disappointment with BBC bosses’ line of questioning during their probe. In my career, I have seen firsthand how sensitive and emotional such investigations can be for those involved, and it is crucial that the interrogation process be carried out with sensitivity and respect. The fact that Amanda found the questioning ‘highly offensive’ suggests that this was not the case, which could potentially compromise the integrity of the investigation and damage the reputation of both Amanda and the BBC. It is important that all parties involved in such investigations are treated fairly and with dignity, to ensure a just outcome for everyone involved.
It was reported that the actress has been quizzed for a second time about an illicit video shared with her by Giovannie as well as a ‘lewd remark’ he made about another celebrity contestant when the video was sent.
In simpler terms, it was reported that the dancer jokingly or insensitively mentioned something about one of Amanda’s relatives. Later, BBC officials inquired from Amanda if the dancer intended this comment as a casual joke.
A source told The Sun: ‘[Amanda] found this line of questioning highly offensive.’
Regarding the claimed video, they communicated to the publication: ‘The BBC must acknowledge that they received the video. There appears to be a chain of proof supporting this.’
As a diligent follower, I recognize that the shared footage might have been intended harmlessly. However, I am aware that such an action may potentially violate the terms of our contract, as stipulated to us, the professional dancers, by the BBC. Thus, it’s crucial we exercise caution to avoid any potential conduct breaches.
A representative from the BBC stated earlier that they won’t provide comments about specific people nor participate in guesswork.
