Craig Melvin’s devastating family history revealed as Hoda Kotb successor named
As an ardent admirer of Craig Melvin, I find myself utterly captivated by his inspiring journey and resilience. His life story is a testament to the indomitable human spirit, as he overcame adversity with grace and determination.
On Thursday morning, during a live segment on the Today show, Craig Melvin candidly discussed his heart-wrenching familial background, as it was officially confirmed that he would be taking over from Hoda Kotb.
Overwhelmed with excitement as Savannah Guthrie shared the fantastic news, I couldn’t help but seize the moment to express my heartfelt gratitude. I found myself reminiscing about my roots, proudly acknowledging the profound impact my parents, Lawrence and Betty, have had on my life. Little did many know, my father was born within the walls of a prison – a testament to the strength and resilience that runs in our family.
Yesterday, I had a heartfelt conversation with my parents. I feel incredibly grateful that they remain vibrant and well enough to witness and appreciate the culmination of their hard work. And, as many of you are aware, I carry a unique history with me.
My paternal grandmother raised five children, while my maternal grandmother worked as a custodian at an elementary school. However, due to financial difficulties, my father’s mother resorted to illegal activities such as gambling (running numbers) and selling alcohol (running liquor), which eventually led her to spend time in prison.
Craig went on, his voice catching a little, “My father wasn’t born free; instead, he spent his early days within prison walls. Yet, this fact didn’t shape him entirely. He battled and conquered personal addictions throughout his life, transforming into one of my most admired individuals.
He also mentioned that his mother once took on a second job to make sacrifices and support our family. For this reason, I am deeply grateful to them, even finding it hard to hold back the tears.
The man with two children expressed gratitude towards his companion, Lindsay Czarniak, by stating: “My wife, Lindsay, who’s been putting up with me for 13 years, and may goodness be with her. And before that, she was a part of the early stages of my professional journey.
This morning, I spoke with her. She’s currently on a trip, but we shared a lovely moment that I’m incredibly grateful for. As for my job, you know how demanding it can be – endless days and sleepless nights. Yet, she’s been by my side since the very beginning, providing support throughout the years.
Furthermore,” he said, “my children – Del, age ten, and Sybil, soon to be eight – make me proud each day, and I adore them deeply, as well as this special place.
Regarding my position today, he commented: “On TV each morning, viewers only witness us, but they’re unaware of the talented individuals operating the cameras and working below deck. Our television news team is simply exceptional, and it’s an honor for me to be included in this remarkable group.
“I am incredibly thrilled and thankful, as I spoke with many important people in my life yesterday, and I can’t help but express my gratitude towards NBC and those here who consider me deserving.
Craig also took the opportunity to mention his Christian faith as he thanked ‘the man upstairs.’
The TV star expressed gratitude towards their higher power, including God and Jesus, and acknowledged that they have been bestowed with countless blessings throughout their life, and this recent event is simply another addition to that ongoing stream of blessings.
Initially, Craig got his start at the local NBC station WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, serving as an “Our Generation Reporter” from 1995 to 1997, even during his high school years.
Following his college graduation, he came back to WIS in July 2001, working first as both a news photographer and producer. Over time, he transitioned into being a reporter for their morning news crew, where he created his own ‘Craig Cam’ live broadcasts.
Initially, he held lower positions, but eventually he advanced to host the weekend morning and evening news broadcasts. Later on, he took charge of the weekday news programming.
In July of 2008, he chose to depart from WIS-TV to work at WRC-TV, which is operated by NBC in Washington, D.C. There, he anchored the weekend evening news broadcasts.
3 years on, by July 2011, Craig switched from WRC-TV to MSNBC, taking up the role of a daytime news anchor. Additionally, he started working as a journalist for NBC News.
In the thrilling year of 2018, I found myself standing in Pyeongchang County, South Korea, reporting for NBC’s captivating coverage of the Winter Olympics. And oh, what a year it was! That same September, I was humbly promoted to anchor the weekday news on Today. To top it off, I became part of the esteemed hosting team for Today Third Hour, a dream come true for this obsessed fan.
In October 2011, Craig tied the knot with Lindsay, who was a sports anchor at ESPN and a former sports reporter for WRC-TV. Their first child, Delano, arrived in March 2014, and their daughter Sybil joined the family in November 2016.
The family currently reside in Connecticut.
