Although Courteney Cox is relatively new to drumming, she wowed her combined social media audience of 20.8 million followers. She shared a video on Tuesday of herself skillfully playing along to Nirvana’s famous 1991 song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
The 61-year-old actress, known for Friends, is nearing completion of the iconic Gen-X song with the help of Twitch streamer Richard ‘Office Drummer’ Ray, who she affectionately calls her ‘mood booster and conductor.’
Courteney seemed to skillfully imitate the drumming style of Nirvana’s Dave Grohl. Interestingly, Grohl admitted to Pharrell Williams that the drum patterns he played during his time with the grunge band were actually inspired by, or borrowed from, disco music.
‘I’m a really simple drummer,’ the 56-year-old Foo Fighters frontman – who still doesn’t know how to read music – shared on the Paramount+ series From Cradle to Stage in 2021.
When you hear Nevermind, the album by Nirvana, I took a lot of inspiration from artists like The Gap Band, Cameo, and Tony Thompson – you can hear it in every song. It’s essentially all disco. That’s the core of it, but nobody seems to notice that connection.
Many of Cox’s fans shared Friends-themed gifs like the one of Jennifer Aniston behind a drum kit.
Instagram user @ajustin615 referenced a memorable line from season three, episode eight of the NBC comedy show: ‘Monica bang!’
“You’re not simply playing the drums,” Instagram user @ladywholounges_ exclaimed. “You’re completely dominating them! A true rockstar!”
The popular content creator also got encouraging messages, including one from singer and actress Rita Wilson, who enthusiastically said: ‘Wow wow wow! This is so exciting! Love it! And you!’
Actress Olivia Munn exclaimed, ‘You’re incredibly talented!’ She added, ‘The number of instruments you play is insane.’
And podcaster Dax Shepard exclaimed in all caps: ‘You’re so cute! And cool!’
It’s hard to believe Courteney only purchased the drum kit back in February.
Cox has previously demonstrated her drumming talent, first on July 20th with a performance to Justin Bieber’s song Daisies, and earlier on April 25th playing along to AC/DC’s 1980 hit Back in Black.
The SAG Award winner is also a skilled pianist and often posted videos of her musical collaborations with well-known guests from her ‘Sunday Supper’ gatherings, such as Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Ed Sheeran, and Natasha Bedingfield.
Courteney was recently in the news on September 7th after running into Bruce Springsteen at the US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York. She was there with her partner, Johnny McDaid, who plays guitar and keyboard for the band Snow Patrol.
I’ll never forget when Courtney Cox first caught my eye! She was just 20 years old when she danced with the legendary ‘Boss’ – Bruce Springsteen, of course – in the music video for Dancing In the Dark. It was directed by Brian De Palma back in 1984, and it was such an iconic moment – that’s really how I discovered her!

The actress, originally from Alabama and known for her brunette hair, is set to return as Gail Weathers in Scream 7, the latest installment from Kevin Williamson. The film will be released in US and UK cinemas on February 27 and will also star her former husband, David Arquette, alongside Neve Campbell, Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, and Joel McHale.
Courteney and her now ex-husband, the 54-year-old Daytime Emmy nominee, divorced in 2013 after being married for 11 years. Their daughter, 21-year-old Coco Arquette, is currently a drama student at The New School in Manhattan.
Courteney Cox is also actively involved in her company, Homecourt, which creates high-end home and body care products. She started the business in 2022 with Sarah Jahnke, who previously worked at L’Oréal.
