Countryfile star Adam Henson breaks down in tears after learning he saved life of farmer who had spiralled into 'very dark place'

As an ardent admirer of Adam Henson, I find myself deeply moved by his recent revelations. The man is not just a farmer or a TV star; he’s a beacon of resilience and compassion, shining brightly in the darkest corners of our agricultural community. His podcast, Keeping On Track, isn’t just another series to me, but a lifeline for those battling the silent storm that is mental health within farming.

Countryfile personality Adam Henson shared that he was moved to tears upon learning that a farmer’s mental health podcast he hosts had played a crucial role in saving someone’s life.

As a farmer and author of a certain age, I have faced the harsh realities of losing a dear friend to suicide, a loss that has left a profound impact on my life. This tragedy has made me acutely aware of the concerning mental health statistics within our farming community. The resilience and determination required in this profession can often mask the internal struggles that many farmers face, and it is crucial that we open up conversations about mental health to ensure those who need help feel supported and heard. My personal experience has made me a strong advocate for raising awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health issues within agriculture.

In October 2023, he teamed up with The Sound Doctor to launch his podcast titled “Keeping On Track.” After receiving an outpouring of praise, he announced that a second season was being planned.

Adam shared with Farmers Guide about a recent encounter he had: “At a gathering not long ago, a woman approached me and expressed gratitude, saying, ‘You were instrumental in saving my husband’s life.'”

When asked, she clarified that he is a farm manager who had been going through a deep mental struggle, but a podcast series has significantly uplifted him and motivated him to seek assistance.

We embraced, our eyes filling with tears. In my mind, I reflected that if our efforts have touched even a single soul, then our task has been accomplished successfully.

Adam shared openly about spending his whole life immersed in farming and acknowledging that numerous factors are beyond one’s control, a situation he thinks contributes significantly to the elevated suicide rates prevalent within this industry.

The goal of his series is to foster conversation among farmers, ensuring that nobody feels isolated or suffers in secrecy.

According to a recent report by the Farm Safety Foundation, a staggering 92% of young British farmers (under 40) now view mental health issues as their most significant, unseen challenge, compared to 82% in 2018, indicating a concerning rise in this problem among them.

Furthermore, research carried out by RABI reveals that farmers tend to experience more mental health issues compared to individuals who are not farmers. Interestingly, data from the year 2021 indicates that a third of farming community members might be suffering from depression.

You can listen to the second series of Keeping On Track wherever you get your podcasts.

The heartfelt admission comes just after bravely opened up about his wife Charlie’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis and how has it affected their family – including the heartbreaking admission that she wrote goodbye letters to her loved ones.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share this heartwarming tale. The captivating TV host disclosed that our beloved couple found themselves shedding tears in abundance after Charlie received his diagnosis. In the face of adversity, they chose to unite in matrimony promptly, viewing their nuptials as a poignant way to bid farewell to all those who have walked with them through life’s journey.

In early February 2021, Charlie, currently undergoing recovery, had been feeling sick since the holidays of Christmas 2020. Unable to shake off her illness, she sought medical attention when she was still unwell. Later on, doctors discovered a 4.5cm tumor in her body.

The pair exchanged vows in September 2021 during a heartfelt wedding at Stroud Registrar Office, surrounded by their dearest family members. Their special moment took place on the eve before Charlie’s scheduled operation.

2023 found me expressing to The Mirror that the vows we exchanged solidified my feelings towards Charlie, allowing me to openly articulate, sincerely and honestly, the depth of emotion he stirs within me.

Originally meeting during their high school years, they now reside on a sprawling 1600-acre farm in the Cotswolds region, a place Adam once called home. They are proud guardians of Ella and Alfie, two young adults who have reached their twenties.
