Country star engaged after ‘most Nashville proposal ever’ at legendary venue

Country music artist Ruston Kelly is engaged to girlfriend Tia Cubelic.

The singer-songwriter, age 37 and formerly married to Kacey Musgraves, shared the news on social media Wednesday.

Musician Ruston proposed to their partner at the famous Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, just after releasing their fourth album, ‘Pale, Through the Window,’ in September.

He shared a photo on Instagram of the two of them right after she accepted his proposal. The picture was taken backstage at the Opry last month, and he wrote that he and his best friend had become partners for life – they’re engaged!

A video from his show at the Opry on September 24th captures the musician sharing the news with the crowd.

You know, I was just sharing a story, and it reminded me of a really pivotal moment in my life – meeting my fiancé! It’s funny, I always used to say I had a girlfriend, but I actually proposed to her right after coming off stage! So now she’s officially my fiancé, and I couldn’t be happier.

It was incredible! Everyone just erupted when he started talking about how both our families were there. And get this – he proposed right in front of a picture of Johnny Cash! It was the most perfect, unexpected moment, and I’m still reeling from it all.

The album, created with frequent collaborator Jarrad K and recorded live with his band at Chateau Noir, blends dreamy synthesizers, atmospheric pedal steel guitar played by his father, Tim “TK” Kelly, emotional guitar work, and the powerful energy of Kelly’s voice.

The couple announced their exciting news in a statement to People magazine, expressing their joy and enthusiasm.

Ruston explained in September that she simply writes about her own life experiences, and currently feels grateful, loving, and secure, which is reflected in her work.

Tia, who is also a musician, plays the violin on the song “House in the Country,” and she contributed backing vocals to several other tracks.

They met while on vacation in South Carolina in June 2024 and were surprised to find out they were both from Nashville.

Ruston and Kacey wed in October 2017, but by July 2020 they announced their breakup.

In 2021 Kacey told Rolling Stone the marriage ‘just simply didn’t work out.’

It was simply a case of two people deeply in love, but facing obstacles that ultimately prevented them from staying together. She explained, ‘Like the seasons, relationships change, and ours just ran its course.’

She confessed that she sometimes doubts the idea of marriage itself. While she was willing to try it when she fell in love and fully committed to it at the time, she now reminds herself that she was courageous to have acted on her feelings.

Kacey highlighted Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, who have been a couple since 1983 and are both still unmarried, as a model for a successful and lasting relationship.

The Texas-born songstress noted, ‘I think I live best by myself. I think it’s OK to realize that.’
