Country Music Legend Melba Montgomery, Known for Iconic Duets, Passes Away at 86
Country singer Melba Montgomery has died at the age of 86.
The songbird frequently collaborated with renowned artists like Charlie Louvin, Gene Pitney, and George Jones, creating memorable duets that left lasting impressions.
Additionally, the individual hailing from Alabama not only resides there but is also known for composing songs for popular singers such as Sara Evans, Patty Loveless, Travis Tritt, and Terri Clark. In 2000, George Strait achieved a number four hit with What Do You Say to That, a song she penned.
The passing of the individual was announced by her daughter, Melissa Solomon Barrett, through a Facebook post dated January 15th.
In a heartfelt tone, I share the profound sorrow that my family and I are experiencing – we’ve bid farewell to an extraordinary woman, my beloved mother, Melba Montgomery Solomon.
She was an exceptional mother, a cherished grandmother, a loving sister to your uncle, a dear sister-in-law to your aunts, and a respected aunt to your cousins.
Solomon Barrett mentioned that his deceased mother endured a prolonged struggle against dementia and is now reunited with her cherished spouse, Jack Solomon, in Heaven.
Montgomery was married to Jack Solomon from 1968 until his death in 2014.
‘We know mom has been waiting to hold dad for over 10 years,’ she continued.
In the upcoming days, we’ll organize visits and funerals once we gather more information. We appreciate your profound love for our mother just as we do. She was a remarkably gifted, compassionate, and selfless individual.
The note was concluded by Solomon Barrett; it was signed by Tara Solomon Capps, Jackie Solomon Chancey (Montgomery’s daughters), and Diane Holt (her niece).
The New York Times was the first to report the news.
Montgomery was raised mostly in Alabama.
She got her star singing in church before she formed a trio band with her two brothers.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that my performance at a Nashville talent competition earned me the top spot. Following this incredible victory, the legendary artist Roy Acuff graciously invited me to join his esteemed band for a tour.
Montgomery recorded a few singles for a small label but did not get much traction.
1963 was a pivotal year for me, as my fortune shifted dramatically. That’s when the legendary George Jones discovered some of my songs, prompting him to introduce me to his record label, United Artists, where I was eventually signed.
They had a magical combination, it turned out.
In 1963, they produced the album titled “We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds,” which peaked at number three on the music charts.
Next came 1963’s Let’s Invite Them Over and What’s in Our Heart.
In 1972 they had a hit with the tune Party Pickin.
During their collaboration, she and Charlie Louvin produced the well-known tunes “Something to Brag About” and “Did You Ever.
Then when she worked with Gene Pitney, they had success with Being Together.
On her own, she achieved fame with the 1974 tune titled “No Charge”. Other well-known tracks include “Don’t Let the Good Times Deceive You” and “Angel of the Morning”.
In 1968, Jack Solomon tied the knot with Montgomery, and they spent nearly four decades as a couple until his passing in 2014 at the age of 71.
In the latest chapter of my life, I am fortunate to be cherished by my beloved brother Earl, my daughters Jackie Solomon Chancey, Tara Solomon Capps, Diana Lynn Cirigliano, and Melissa Solomon Barrett; five grandchildren who brighten my days with their laughter and love; and two great-grandchildren, the youngest members of our family tree. As reported by The New York Times, these dear ones stand as a testament to the legacy I have built over the years.
