Country music fans left bitterly divided over Garth Brooks being inducted into Austin City Limits’ Hall of Fame
As a long-time resident of Austin, Texas and a devoted fan of music, I can’t help but feel strongly about the recent controversy surrounding the induction of Garth Brooks into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. Having grown up listening to local artists on ACL and being inspired by their unique sounds and stories, it feels disheartening to see a major label artist with a massive following receive this recognition over homegrown talent.
Supporters and critics of country music are deeply disagreed upon the announcement that Garth Brooks is set to join the Austin City Limits’ Hall of Fame.
Recently, Austin City Limits revealed their plans to pay tribute to Garth, who is 62 years old, during their 50th Anniversary event in September.
Some musicians’ fans celebrated the news, but others expressed disappointment on the web when he reached this milestone.
According to Kyle Coroneos, a reporter and founder of SavingCountryMusic.com, he believed that Garth, being an Oklahoma native and not deeply connected to the Austin music community, did not fully deserve recognition.
I recently penned down my thoughts on that particular issue and published them on my site. In my perspective, Garth’s upcoming induction comes across as a bare-bones ploy to boost the show’s profile and cater to the demands of corporate sponsors.
I’ve always been a huge fan of country music, and among all the artists, Garth Brooks holds a special place in my heart. Growing up in rural Texas, his music was a constant companion during long summer days on the farm. So when I came across this lengthy essay extolling the virtues of this legendary singer-songwriter, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia.
While some traditional country music fans may grimace at the mention of Garth Brooks’ name, as if they’ve encountered an unwelcome pest, it’s important to acknowledge that his musical catalog is noteworthy and authentically country, despite his commercialization efforts that surpassed previous levels.
‘But the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame? No, sorry. That’s not for someone like Garth Brooks.’
Kyle proposed that only musicians deeply rooted in Austin and Texas music history, holding significant influence over the city and state’s musical landscape, deserve induction into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame.
Some artists who aren’t originally from Austin but have made significant marks on the show were previously welcomed into the Austin music scene’s close-knit community by having iconic performances.
“During the 25th anniversary season, Garth Brooks made an appearance on Austin City Limits more than once. However, one might question the significance of his presence in relation to the Austin music scene.”
“Honoring Garth Brooks with the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction is seen as a blatant move to boost publicity for the show and please major sponsors.”
In simpler terms, receiving another accolade for Garth Brooks’ legacy won’t make a difference in his Wikipedia entry.
An Austin or Texas unknown, who lacked the backing of a major record label, corporate radio play, and extensive tours, might see their legacy significantly enhanced through an ACL Hall of Fame induction. Without this recognition, their name could fade into obscurity.
An alternative suggestion from Kyle was to invite artists such as Steve Earle, Doug Sahm, Nanci Griffith, Patty Griffin, and Willis Alan Ramsey instead.
In addition, he mentioned bands based in Austin such as Silverada, Shane Smith & the Saints, and The Dixie Chicks.
He remarked that Austin City Limits shouldn’t solely feature emerging artists from Austin and declining legends, or else it may lose its relevance and significance.
From the very beginning, the show has been known for attracting big-name stars in the industry. However, it’s hard to imagine Garth Brooks being part of its Hall of Fame.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my thoughts for those unsung heroes of country and roots music. For decades, they’ve toiled in the background, often overshadowed by none other than the legendary Garth Brooks. Yet their passion and talent are equally deserving of recognition.
PBS’ “Austin City Limits” holds the record as the longest-running music TV show, and Garth has graced its stage with his performances numerous times throughout the years.
Stars who have been honored in the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame prior to now are not native to Austin, Texas. Among them are Sheryl Crow, Rosanne Cash, Loretta Lynn, and B.B. King.
Some of Kyle’s audience supported his perspective, while others defended the choice to welcome Garth into the group.
“Although it’s not the initial action I would have preferred for ACL, I get it and don’t disagree. I’ve always appreciated his music.”
‘I had to look up whether Garth had ever played ACL before,’ someone else said.
‘Apparently, back in 1990 and 2000. I don’t think he has had any memorable performances on ACL.’
I’m a huge fan of Garth, but I have to admit that his music feels a bit unusual at the Austin City Limits festival. Don’t get me wrong, there are several of his tunes that resonate deeply with me, and I don’t harbor any hatred towards him or his art.
“His music became a pop culture sensation, but it seemed more like mass-produced output rather than authentic art. I recall watching Austin City Limits before the era of fast internet connections.”
“Finding that music was an amazing experience, and it was rare to discover new tunes. It broadened my musical horizons significantly.”
At Instagram, Austin City Limits announced that Garth will be honored with induction on September 5 at Moody Theater in Austin, Texas.
He is set to perform at the event, and tickets go on sale August 2.
“Garth Brooks is the latest addition to Austin City Limits’ Hall of Fame as we begin our 50th Anniversary celebrations, bringing excitement and joy to our team,” the text could be paraphrased.
As a dedicated follower and avid fan of the ACL Hall of Fame for over ten years, I’m thrilled to announce that for the first time ever, we’ll be recognizing just one extraordinary individual during our historic induction ceremony. What an unforgettable moment this will be!
While Kyle and his readers seemed unhappy, the Instagram post was flooded with positive comments.
‘Love this so much,’ gushed one person, while another wrote, ‘Yes! Wow.’
‘Let’s go,’ said someone else with a bunch of handclapping emojis.
