Could Garret Dillahunt Be The New Green Arrow in James Gunn’s DCU?

It’s possible that recent photos might be hinting at a previously undisclosed DC hero, Green Arrow, being played by Garret Dillahunt in James Gunn’s DC Universe. This is suggested by Dillhunt’s latest Instagram post, which some fans interpret as a clue, given his potential role alongside Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre on the upcoming HBO series.

Dillahunt posted a series of images on his Instagram Story, which were shared by DCU Updates on X. Among these images was a storyboard suggesting he might portray the famous DC superhero in costume. Additionally, another picture seems to show him as Oliver Queen (also known as Green Arrow), fueling speculation that he may have been secretly chosen for the comic book character’s role.

In my perspective, there’s a division among DC fans regarding Dillahunt. Some are convinced he’s portraying the iconic character from the comics, but others, including myself, aren’t so sure. We suspect that the actor might be just having fun with his followers, as the storyboard resembles the same ‘production still’ he shared, enhanced with a filter.

Curiously, the actor tagged artist Seth Adams in the second post.

As I was scrolling through Instagram eight hours prior to Dillahunt’s debut as Green Arrow, Adams dropped a hint with a snapshot of a customized elder Green Arrow LEGO Minifigure styled after “The Dark Knight Returns” version of the character. This intriguing reveal seems to suggest that this could be a clandestine strategy to introduce the iconic character into the DC Universe.

Back in November 2024, Garret Dillahunt secured his role in James Gunn’s DCU for the HBO series titled Lanterns. His character, William Macon, was initially portrayed as a charismatic cowboy with a secretively devious alter-ego. Initially, spectators presumed that this character would become the antagonist of the upcoming series. However, recent updates might suggest a different storyline.

The TV show titled “Lanterns” is being created by Chris Mundy, a veteran in television creative work, who crafts a hard-hitting crime narrative revolving around two Green Lantern characters (portrayed by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre). These superheroes are investigating a series of murders in the heartland of America. The HBO DC series is currently being produced and it’s expected to be released in 2026.

Is Garret Dillahunt Secretly Playing Green Arrow?

Although it hasn’t been formally announced, there are strong hints suggesting that Garret Dillahunt might be portraying the secret character of Green Arrow in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Recently, enthusiasts caught a glimpse of the rising talent, High Potential, donning a silicon outfit, playfully hinting it was for his upcoming venture. This attire seems fitting for a snug Green Arrow super suit, given that he might be portraying the renowned DC character if these rumors are true.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but ponder if the character typically portrayed as the villain in the Lanterns series might just be the main adversary in the upcoming DC HBO series. Could it be that the Green Arrow, with his rugged demeanor and simmering resentment, takes on this role? That’s an intriguing thought to explore!

This approach could make the character stand out distinctly compared to how Stephen Amell portrayed Green Arrow in the popular “Arrow” series that ran from 2012 to 2020.

In a different take, Amell portrayed his character as an ordinary, standard hero. This might have been director James Gunn’s strategy to introduce the cherished DC figure into the storyline without conflicting with what had transpired earlier.

As a movie critic, I found Dillahunt’s portrayal of his character in the Lanterns series initially serving as a subtle antagonist, subtly paving the way for a shift towards a fresher, more conventional depiction of our hero somewhere down the line within the franchise.
