Costumes Resurrected in Ryan Coogler’s Hit Vampire Movie
The director of Black Panther has experienced significant success outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year with the release of the vampire film titled Sinners. However, it appears that the director was not as distant from the Marvel realm as initially believed. Set in 1932 and featuring as twin brothers who come back to their town to discover it being overrun by the undead, Sinners shares an unexpected link with the most proficient vampire hunter, Blade. And this connection is something you might have overlooked.
The struggle to bring Blade back to the movie theaters has been widely discussed, as the reboot, featuring an Oscar-winning actor as the main character, has undergone numerous plot changes and shifts in direction. One of these storylines considered sending The Daywalker back in time, but this concept was eventually discarded. However, the abandoned costumes were later repurposed in the film Sinners.
In an interview on ScreenCrush: The Podcast!, Sev Ohanian, producer of the series “Sinners”, shared that renowned costume designer Ruth Carter had designed costumes for the aborted Blade reboot. These designs were meant for a time period that would have overlapped with the era depicted in “Sinners”. Carter is known for her work on films like Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Initially, Ruth Carter had been involved in a project titled “Blade” intended for production, but eventually, it didn’t move forward. At some stage, this movie was planned to explore themes related to the past during a similar time period, which she has mentioned previously.
She unexpectedly owned a warehouse stocked with costumes suitable for the era, and it felt urgent as if we needed to film the movie the next day. Fortunately, Marvel showed great generosity and kindness by allowing us to buy the warehouse at an affordable price.
Maybe Marvel Should Just Give ‘Blade’ to Ryan Coogler?
Although progress on the Blade reboot seems to be moving forward (albeit slowly), with Ali at the helm, the journey has been fraught with obstacles and detours. Delroy Lindo, who was once set to co-star in the film as part of the Da 5 Bloods and Sinners cast, has expressed concerns about the production, stating it had “gone off the rails.” He elaborated, “It was an exciting concept and I was thrilled about the character I would be playing. However, for reasons unknown to me, it just veered off course.
Regarding the movie titled “Sinners“, directed by Ryan Coogler, it has achieved significant success in the horror genre. A self-penned and helmed production featuring an ensemble cast that includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Delroy Lindo, and Michael B. Jordan, the film was warmly received upon its debut (receiving a 97% approval rating from critics and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes). Subsequently, it grossed an impressive $364 million at the global box office, marking it as the highest-grossing live-action original film in over a decade.
