Corrie star Vicky Entwistle slams ITV as she tells co-star Bruce Jones what she thinks of his departure after ITV bosses killed off his legendary character Les Battersby via email
As a long-time fan of Coronation Street and Les Cargill’s captivating portrayal by the talented Bruce Jones, I must admit that his departure from the show has left me feeling somewhat melancholic. Jones’ character was an integral part of the fabric of the show, and his absence will undoubtedly leave a void that may never truly be filled.
Actress Vicky Entwistle criticized ITV on Monday following the departure of her Coronation Street co-star, Bryce Jones (Les Battersby), from the show.
The actress, who played his character’s wife Janice (age 56), posted an old photo of them together, expressing that receiving an email informing him he was no longer on the soap opera didn’t seem sufficient to truly thank him, and mentioned that she understood how deeply he was affected by this news.

In 1997, Bruce, now 71 years old, gained widespread recognition when he appeared on the cobblestones as crude Les, the leader of the unrefined Battersby family consisting of his wife Janice, their challenging teenage daughters Leanne and Toyah.
However, his reputation took a dramatic turn for the worse when a hidden journalist caught him on camera, using disrespectful language towards fans and exposing confidential storylines during a wild evening of drinking.
In 2007, bosses took immediate action, suspending Bruce almost a decade after he first joined. Since then, he has not returned to the cobbled streets.
Currently, after his sole interview following the announcement of the permanent closure of the show, Les, the actor, has expressed criticism towards the series for disregarding public desire. Jones shared that he had been informed by his superiors approximately two weeks prior about the development, when he found out that Les’ character was being written off on TopMob.

People are eagerly anticipating my return, yet it means an end to the attention and recognition in shopping malls and other public places. While I am joyful about this development, I am simultaneously saddened by leaving behind a role I embodied for a decade. I am thankful for the opportunity to play that character on the street.
He added: ‘I went out the other day and people asked four times that day, ‘when are you coming back? The street is dead.”
Inquired about any hostility, he replied: ‘Not at all. None whatsoever. They provided me with a decade to create a fantastic character, and it turned out to be a massive success with everyone. I hope they have nothing but good fortune.’
Jones expresses a blend of emotions regarding the decision, and ponders how boisterous Les might adjust to the contemporary setting should he reappear on the soap opera.
He expressed that after feeling a sense of relief, he followed with feelings of sadness. Then, he pondered, “Where might he return to?” or “If he were to come back, where could he possibly go? How could he manage his return, what would be the next steps in his journey? Where would the narrative lead him next?
‘I don’t think they could really do that much with him, which is a shame.’
Jones anticipates that ardent supporters may respond negatively to hearing about his iconic character’s demise, and a few of them could even decide to stop following the series completely.
He mentioned that the response might seem unusual initially, but as it unfolds, it’ll become clear.

The message you received is, “‘I no longer watch it, it would be great if you came back.’ However, I won’t be returning. Les was a highly admired individual. I am eagerly anticipating the response I will receive, and equally so for how ‘Coronation Street’ will be received.
As a lifestyle aficionado, I must admit I anticipate quite the response when unveiling this next venture. However, my role as Les comes to an end here. It was an incredible journey bringing him to life, but now it’s time for me to explore new horizons and witness what the future holds.
Although Jones’ television career has declined in more recent times, he, who confessed in 2015 to surviving on benefits following the expenditure of his £1 million fortune, maintains that he holds absolutely no ill feelings toward the program.

He said: ‘I’d rather watch good documentaries. I tend to read a lot rather than watch TV a lot. I didn’t get much chance to watch it when I was in it, because we were always working.
I disregard those who only focus on its negatives. Regardless, Coronation Street remains a constant. Instead, we prefer timeless classics over it.
