Beverley Callard announced she’s undergoing surgery on Friday to have two lymph nodes removed as part of her treatment for breast cancer.
The well-known Coronation Street actress, age 68, recently learned she had a diagnosis shortly after moving to Dublin for a part on the Irish soap opera, Fair City. She shared the news publicly earlier this month.
Beverley, famous for playing Liz McDonald on the British television show Coronation Street, shared that her cancer was detected early. However, she will need to travel back to the UK for treatment, including radiotherapy and surgery.
After a breast cancer diagnosis, doctors often remove lymph nodes from under the arm because cancer cells that spread from the breast tend to collect there.
The actress shared a video on Instagram on Friday, filmed from the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, saying she was getting ready for an operation.
Just wanted to let anyone facing a similar situation know what’s happening with me. I’m at the hospital and today’s the day – I’m actually relieved it’s here. I’m feeling prepared, strong, and good. Unfortunately, my husband, Jon, had to go home; the hospital sent him home.
I’m here with some other women, and we’ve been talking. They’ve been marking me with drawings, and I have an appointment for an injection in about an hour. The anesthesiologist, Peter, just came in to see me. I’m feeling alright, though.
Everyone experiences moments of self-absorption or vanity now and then, and I’m not the only one. Another woman told me she feels the same way.
I’m a little worried about how things will look and what I’ll wear, but I’m confident and capable, and I’ll update you on how it all goes.
Beverley shared an update on Thursday, explaining she visited the hospital that morning. Doctors wanted to discuss some concerns regarding her lymph nodes and glands.
Doctors don’t think the problem has spread to the lymph nodes, but they’ll remove two of them during my surgery on Friday just to be certain.
I’m facing a major surgery, but I have complete faith in the doctors and staff. I wanted to share that my care is at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital – it’s a fantastic NHS hospital, and they’re doing a wonderful job.
The staff were very patient with me and all the other patients. It was really helpful to be able to talk to people who understood what I was going through, especially since some were facing even more difficult situations than mine.
I feel incredibly grateful. There are so many strong women in the world, and I encourage you to face tomorrow with courage and get through it.
Honestly, the hardest part is just waiting. I’ve been cleaning the house non-stop, I just can’t seem to relax and stop worrying.
Tomorrow’s the day – the operation! Honestly, I’m feeling really good, surprisingly strong and positive about it all. If you’ve been through something similar, or are going through it now, please reach out and let me know how you’re doing. I’d really love to hear from you.
‘Truly, your stories mean a great deal to me.’
The soap opera actress will be joining the RTÉ show ‘Fair City’ as Lily, the mother of a current character, Gwen (played by Emily Lamey), who was previously thought to be lost.
Earlier photos released for publicity show Beverley dressed as her character, sporting a black leather jacket.
In another photo, the actress is wearing a cream-colored, ruffled jacket and jeans as she stands beside a sign that says ‘Welcome to Carrigstown’.
Beverley recently responded to rumors that she was using weight-loss injections after people noticed her weight loss.
Let me tell you, I’ve always been a firm believer in hard work and dedication, and that includes taking care of your body. I’ve been incredibly focused on fitness for as long as I can remember, really pushing myself to stay in shape. It’s a lifestyle for me, and it takes a lot of effort – I’ve truly been working hard to achieve my goals!
Beverley stated that her impressive body is the result of dedication and effort, not weight loss injections.
She explained that she wouldn’t criticize anyone for getting vaccinated and encouraged people to make the best choice for their own needs.
