Coronation Street’s Shobna Gulati Comes Out as Non-Binary and Finds Love!

Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati has revealed that they now identify as non-binary.

The actor, from the ITV soap where they portrayed Sunita Alahan, admitted that they just discovered a term for emotions they’ve felt throughout their lifetime.

In conversation with Kaye Adams on the How to be 60 podcast, Shobna, aged 58, stated: ‘I feel happier identifying myself as an individual rather than a specific gender. I guess you could say that’s my identity – I identify as non-binary.’

The individual who identifies as both female and nonbinary (using the pronouns ‘she/they’) on social media went on to say: “I’ve never found a term for it before, but our younger generation has helped me understand what that might be called. I know how it feels to be myself.

Throughout my lifetime, I’ve always struggled to find the right words to express something significant, and I’ve never been able to clearly articulate it. It seems that even my closest relatives might not have given much thought to this matter.

They’ve just pondered: ‘Shobna seems to embody an extreme of femininity or masculinity.’ Since I was recently recognized as someone who happened to fall from a tree, and also someone who adorned makeup and performed a dance.

At age 23, Shobna wed architect Anshu Srivastava during a traditional Hindu wedding, but they parted ways after just four years together. Exactly a year following their separation, Shobna welcomed her son, Akshay, into the world; today, he is 30 years old.

During her 12-year stint on Coronation Street, she was in a relationship with Gary Turner, an actor from Emmerdale, for four years. She admitted on the podcast that her relationships, though they existed, were quite public.

It was distressing for me since I felt I lacked sufficient time to build relationships, expand my family, and maintain a personal life due to the lack of privacy and constant exposure.

Previously, it became clear that Shoba was contemplating a change in profession following her unsuccessful attempt at an audition.

At times, I wonder why I chose this profession. To be honest, there are moments when I question my decision. But remember, the job market can be tough, so hang in there!

However, during the very same month, she was bestowed the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace.

On the significant day, Shobna, honored with an MBE for her contributions to the cultural sectors, presented herself elegantly.

The actress with a 35-year-long career in the entertainment field has just appeared in the final episode of Vera, broadcasted on New Year’s Day. From December 26th, you can catch her in The Serial Killer’s Wife airing on Channel 5.

Shobna also took part in the Bake Off festive special which aired on Christmas Eve.

In 2013, the actress said goodbye forever to the streets of Weatherfield, planning a fittingly emotional exit for her beloved character, which was full of dramatic flair.

Moving away from her current career path on the street, the actress expressed at the time that although it seemed like a farewell to her character Sunita, she was excited about delving into comedy roles in the future.

In a statement issued earlier, she expressed that she has cherished portraying Sunita, however, having acted this role from 2001 to 2005 and then rejoining Corrie four years ago, she now feels it’s the right moment for her to concentrate on different areas of her professional life.

For years, I’ve made a promise to myself to watch my son complete his education, and I’ve kept that pledge. Writing comedy has always been something close to my heart, but the dedication required for a show like Corrie is immense and it leaves little room for focusing on other endeavors.

‘I’d love to be able to combine my writing and acting career in the future.

Experiencing the character of Sunita has been an amazing privilege. I’ve truly relished following her storyline and can hardly wait with anticipation for her dramatic exit.

I’ll surely feel her absence. On the bright side, I’ve forged numerous connections among the actors and team members – friendships that I believe will endure over time.

From 2001 to 2006, as well as from 2009 to 2013, the actress portrayed Sunita Alahan on Coronation Street.

In 2019, she assumed the character of Ray in the West End play “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” and later repeated this role for the film version. She was the sole leading actress to take on this dual responsibility.

Shobna reprised her role in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie for the 2023-2024 UK and Ireland Tour.
