Coronation Street's Sean Wilson reveals he was axed from the soap over unfounded historic sex claim as he says 'his reputation was ruined in eight minutes' after learning of the allegation

As a seasoned observer of the tumultuous world of showbiz, I find myself deeply saddened by the unfortunate turn of events for the once-beloved Coronation Street star, Sean Wilson. The man who brought Martin Platt to life for decades has found himself ensnared in the murky waters of unsubstantiated allegations, a situation that has left his career and personal life in tatters.

Sean Wilson recently disclosed that he was let go from Coronation Street earlier this year due to an allegation of a sexual nature that turned out to be unsubstantiated.

The actor, aged 59, known for portraying Martin Patt on the daytime drama, was scheduled to reappear on the set in the past few months. He had even shot scenes alongside his former on-screen spouse, Gail, played by Helen Worth.

Sean learned that his dismissal from the show is under consideration due to a historical accusation of indecent assault from 1997, without being provided with specifics about the matter.

10 days back, he received a clean bill from the police, and it’s been reported that no additional investigation will be conducted regarding the allegation, which was brought forth by a woman connected to the soap opera industry.

In conversation with The Sun, Sean expressed: “In the span of eight minutes, my reputation crumbled – my entire world shattered.

‘I didn’t know who filed the complaint or what it was about, but it led to me losing my job. It’s been a terrible experience for me, as I’ve felt down throughout this time.’

In July, it became public knowledge that Sean would be rejoining the cast of Coronation Street following an absence of 19 years, with his character set to feature in a Christmas plot centering around the departure of his on-screen spouse, Gail.

However, ITV subsequently clarified that his surprising departure from the program was due to personal matters.

Sean had accepted a four-month deal for ten episodes and was excited about going back to the soap opera where he acted between 1985 and 2005, as well as a short comeback in 2018.

However, only two weeks into the filming process, Sean received an email from his superiors on August 1, scheduling a meeting with him at the Coronation Street studios.

The email partly read: ‘This is to discuss a historical allegation of a sexual nature which has been made about you in the past few days relating to when you were previously under contract to the programme. We will realise this will come out of the blue for you as it has for us.’

Sean headed off to the studios for a meeting, promptly phoning his long-time partner, Carol Hammond, and his agent, Katherine Stonehouse, who connected virtually through Zoom.

According to the actor, three high-ranking individuals shared with him an accusation that Sean is said to have inappropriately touched a woman underneath her skirt. Additionally, authorities reportedly informed these executives that they had forwarded the case to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for further investigation.

Sean wasn’t given the identity of the individual who brought forth the accusation; instead, he learned that the incident occurred in 1997, and the person was associated with the program at that time.

He engaged the services of two attorneys, one to locate the police officer handling the grievance and determine if an investigation was ongoing, and another to assist in managing the rumors surrounding his exit from the program, which involved the media.

On October 25, Sean mentioned he participated in an optional gathering with a police constable who is a detective, and he was taken aback when informed that the accusation against him was about allegedly touching someone’s lower back while they were wearing jeans. This differs from what ITV had shared with him.

He was informed by the police that they hadn’t reached out to ITV, which means it wouldn’t have been possible for the case to be forwarded to the CPS since no officer had yet been assigned to handle the case at that specific time.

Additionally, they disclosed the name of the individual he was alleged to have assaulted, yet he failed to identify them, remarking that a vast number, roughly equivalent to those who have worked on Coronation Street, are acquainted with him.

On November 21, Sean felt a sense of relief when the police informed him that no more steps would be required, causing him to shed tears during the conversation.

The performer discussed the aftermath of the accusation, explaining that it was difficult for him to share this news with his children, aged 26 (Callum) and 24 (Maisie). Additionally, he mentioned that retaining legal representation incurred significant financial expenses.

Sean expresses concern that the accusation might harm his professional life. He had envisioned his reappearance on Coronation Street opening doors for a broader resurgence in the entertainment industry, potentially landing him roles in pantomimes or even a stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

He now feels he is ‘persona non grata’ and described his career as being ‘in tatters’.

The actor was angry about the complaint and also said ITV got their facts about it wrong.

Originally, Sean was expected to return to our screens in October, but unfortunately, the ten scenes he shot were eliminated from the script. Instead, a new plotline involving Jesse Chadwick (played by John Thomson), another ex-partner of Gail’s, took its place.

TopMob has contacted ITV representatives for comment.

Following my unwavering love for all things Coronation Street, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the enigmatic Sean Tully. After his departure from the Street, he ventured into an entirely new realm – the world of cheese making! In 2009, he established Artisan Farm, a venture that quickly became my obsession. Over time, he penned several cookbooks filled with his exquisite cheese recipes, each one adding fuel to my passion for this dairy delight.

From 1983 to 2013, he was a regular on the daytime drama, but aside from a brief appearance in 2018, he’s largely avoided the spotlight since then.

Back in 2016, I found myself entangled in a romantic affair with the captivating Susie Fenwick, another acting sensation. However, our love story took a turn for the complex, as we parted ways some time ago, despite persistent rumors linking us together in more recent headlines.

Back in July, I was thrilled to learn that I’d be stepping back into the shoes of Martin once more, a role I originally played, as part of Gail’s emotional farewell following half a century on the iconic cobbled streets.

When Sean received the scripts for filming, he expressed: “It felt wonderful to be asked back to Coronation Street once more, to play a part in writing Helen’s farewell tale.

He added: ‘We’ll have a few months to catch up with Martin and Gail again, following the ebbs and flows of the unfolding storyline.

Enjoying playing as Martin from the start has been delightful, and it feels like I’m resuming my previous role, which might stir up trouble for the Platt family, causing unexpected complications.

It feels as cozy and familiar as putting on a well-worn sweater from the back of the closet… I’m eagerly anticipating reconnecting with my television kin.
