Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews returns to filming following concerned fans’ worries she had been axed from the soap
As a long-time fan of Coronation Street, I was absolutely gutted to hear that Helen Worth, who plays my beloved Gail Platt, is leaving the show after an impressive 50-year run. Having grown up with this iconic character and watched her navigate through the ups and downs of Weatherfield life, it feels like losing a part of my own personal history.
Sally Ann Matthews, an actor on Coronation Street, eased fans’ concerns by appearing at the set, putting to rest speculation about her character being removed from the show.
On Wednesday in Manchester, a 53-year-old actress was seen filming for the soap opera, prompting concern among fans who had been puzzled by her mysterious video post a week prior.
In simpler terms, Sally Ann takes on the role of Jenny Connor, who was once the publican at The Rovers and is now Rita Sullivan’s adopted child. (Barbara Knox portrays Rita.)
In 1986, Sally debuted on the show, leaving fans perplexed after she released a video suggesting her absence on Thursdays should be anticipated.
However, her concerns have vanished since she came back to the stage, wearing an elegant black-and-white dressed adorned with a matching handbag and belt.
After a long break that she referred to as feeling like it had been “forever ago,” the actress was eager to dive back into her role and act once more.
While out and about, Sally Ann accessorized her outfit with a set of stylish mint green wedge espadrilles, carried a black bag, wore a black belt, and donned sunglasses to finish the look.
I, with uncontainable excitement and adoration, watched as Sally gracefully moved towards her workplace. Her sun-kissed strawberry blonde tresses cascaded in soft, undone waves around her shoulders. Her radiant mood was palpable, making each step she took seem like a dance, filling the air with an infectious energy.
The actress initially acted on the cobbled set for a five-year tenure. In 1993, she made a brief comeback for a month. Later, she reappeared for a four-month stint in 2015. Since then, she has been a permanent fixture on the show, returning in 2016.
Sally has been part of significant plotlines including an underage romance with the married Robert Weston and kidnapping Jack, Kevin’s son.
To explain her reason for taking a vacation, the actress went live on Instagram on Thursday and shared, “I decided to board a plane since I tend to be quite reserved at my job.”
‘I’ve got, like, a million years off.’
Sally continued: ‘So, I chose to go on an aeroplane and I chose to remember happier times.’
She said she has been to Cyprus twice in five weeks and was planning to go away again.
The actress continued, “Then I’ll return to Cyprus and do nothing for a while. At some point, I may get offered a job and be employed.”
Based on The Sun’s report, she responded to fans’ questions by asking: “Did you step off the street? Let me check the next query.”
In response to the words from the former Emmerdale star, fans commented: ‘I’m confused’
‘Are you not on Corrie any more. I feel like I’ve missed something or my memory blew up?????’;
‘You’re not on Corrie anymore?’, adding a shocked face emoji.
Metro reported that Sally Ann later said: ”We haven’t seen much of Jenny for a while’.
‘No, you’re not going to be seeing Jenny for quite a long while, so that’s that!’
According to a source, Sally Ann wasn’t taking a “break” as such. She had finished filming last week and might have some time off currently. However, she was set to resume filming by early next month.
TopMob contacted ITV for comment.
After it was announced that Sean Wilson would be rejoining the set as Martin Platt following a six-year absence from Weatherfield, Sally made her way back to film once more.
The actor, who is now 59 years old, has started shooting again for the show, and you’ll see him on TV screens for the first time in October during the narrative of Helen Worth’s departure.
In the given scenes, Jack P Shepherd portrays David, Martin’s surprised son, who encounters his father unexpectedly at home. Instantly wary, David questions Martin’s motives for returning.
When Sean received the first scripts for filming once more on Coronation Street, he expressed, “I was thrilled to be asked back and have a hand in Helen’s departure plot.”
In the upcoming months, we’ll get the chance to reconnect with Martin and Gail as the narrative progresses.
It’s been an pleasure to portray Martin from the very beginning. In a sense, stepping back into this role may bring me full circle, causing unexpected disruptions for the Platt clan.
Reuniting with my TV family is as cozy and familiar as putting on a well-loved sweater from the closet. I’m excited for it.
For two decades between 1985 and 2005, Sean regularly interacted with Martin. However, in 2018, Sean’s family and he moved to New Zealand, prompting him to visit Weatherfield one last time to reconcile with David, who felt disappointed by his father’s decision to relocate overseas.
After Helen stepped down from her role on the cobbles, having brought the character to life for an impressive 50 years since 1974.
Fans throughout the United Kingdom were shattered by the news, and some reacted by discussing on X, now called Twitter, their theories about how the actress’s storyline might conclude.
ITV announced that she will begin shooting her farewell narrative in the upcoming month, with heartfelt sequences set to air towards the end of the year.
Helen announced her departure from the show this year, expressing that it seemed like the ideal moment to bid farewell after having spent an incredible 50-year career on what she lovingly refers to as the best job and street in the world.
At the beginning of this year, I chose to take action and discussed my decision with the producers, who were gracious and accommodating in their response.
I’ve been fortunate enough to receive outstanding script material every week, and I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with talented actors, skilled directors, and an excellent production team.
It’s hard to believe that five decades have passed so quickly, and my upcoming departure hasn’t fully registered with me yet.
