Coronation Street Star John Saint Ryan Dies at 72: Devastated Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
Coronation Street star John Saint Ryan has died at the age of 72.
On April 3, the beloved English actor and horse trainer lost his life, enveloped by his family, following a heart attack.
The sad news about John’s passing was posted on Facebook by his wife, Joyce, stating: ‘On the evening of Thursday, 3rd of April, John suffered a heart attack. We wanted to inform our friends.’
Unfortunately, we were by his side at the hospital, where the dedicated staff did their utmost best; however, tragically, he could not pull through.
We’re truly devastated. John had a strong desire to contribute to medical advancements, so he donated his body for research purposes, meaning there won’t be a traditional funeral service.
In due course, we’ll organize a tribute for his remarkable life. It’s been a privilege for us all to know and cherish this exceptional individual, who I have heard referred to as a ‘Gentleman’ countless times in the past few days.
As a die-hard Coronation Street enthusiast, I had the privilege of portraying the charismatic lorry driver, Charlie Whelan, from 1994 to 1995. My character was deeply entwined with the legendary barmaid, Bet Lynch, a relationship that remains iconic in the annals of this beloved soap opera.
During her separation from her husband Alec, Bet found joy in her relationship with Charlie. However, their bond began to weaken once the barmaid Tanya Pooley developed feelings for him.
Following Tanya’s persuasive efforts, they both fled to Germany, yet their bond didn’t endure long; Tanya ended the relationship shortly thereafter.
Born in Burnley, Lancashire, in 1953, John later took up teaching martial arts within the town. Subsequently, he made his debut as a stand-in for Sean Connery during filming for The Medicine Man.
Later, Saint Ryan first stepped into acting with the television series G.B.H., broadcasted on Channel 4 in 1983. Following this, he landed a minor role in Emmerdale Jameson, and eventually made an appearance on Corrie.
In addition to leading roles, this actor has also appeared in various side parts across films and TV shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, General Hospital, Murder, She Wrote, Cybill, and The Heidi Chronicles.
He also played the main antagonist Cyborg in American Cyborg: Steel Warrior.
John, an ardent fan of Burnley Football Club, moved to California during the early 1990s. There, he established and managed a cattle farm named Red Rose Ranch. At this ranch, John not only trained horses but also honed the skills of riders in both dressage and western riding techniques.
He excels at the Vaquera-style equestrianism, having claimed numerous national and international championships in this particular sport.
Saint Ryan is survived by Joyce and his three sons.
