Corinne Bailey Rae has revealed she feared she wouldn’t be able to cope after the sudden loss of her husband, Jason, who passed away at the young age of 31.
The singer of “Put Your Records On” was only 29 years old when her husband, whom she had been married to for seven years, tragically died from an accidental drug overdose in 2008.
Corinne, now 47, met the saxophonist nine years ago while she was studying English at Leeds University and working at a club. They’ve been together ever since.
As her music career flourished, the couple embarked on global travels, with her husband eventually becoming a member of her band.
Their relationship tragically ended when Jason, known for being extremely careful – Corinne said he wouldn’t even take pain relievers unless he’d been drinking – experimented with methadone after a night out with a friend.
His death was attributed to him being a ‘naive user’ of the heroin substitute medication.
Corinne recently shared that her first reaction was complete shock and disbelief, followed by a sense that her life was over. Despite being only 29 years old, she felt like she’d lived a full life and experienced many wonderful things.
She described feeling like her life was falling apart. She was completely unable to function, stopped leaving the house, and lost her job, she told The Guardian.
It hurt terribly, and that was all I could focus on. I was overwhelmed with pain and just trying to figure out how I would cope with life from that point forward.
Corinne was nearing completion of her second album, The Sea, when Jason passed away, but it wasn’t released for another two years.
During this period, her friendship with Steve Brown, the album’s producer and a former bandmate of Jason, slowly blossomed into a romantic relationship.
The two married in 2013 and now share two daughters aged eight and six.
You know, life is full of surprises! I always say, my second marriage and my family feel like such a wonderful gift. Honestly, I never imagined I’d find love again, let alone become a mom. It’s just been an unexpected and beautiful bonus in my life.
As a music and lifestyle enthusiast, I remember when Corinne Bailey Rae truly captivated us all with “Put Your Records On” back in 2006. It was just the beginning! Her debut, self-titled album was a massive hit – it actually went straight to number one in the UK and has since been certified triple platinum. It was a really special moment for music, and a testament to her incredible talent.
Corrine explained that a significant shift occurred between her first album in 2006 and her second in 2010, directly caused by the tragic loss of Jason. She described how his death deeply impacted her life and work.
‘As well as changing my life, it also changed my career in a really big way’.
She’s marking the 20th anniversary of her song ‘Put Your Records On’ by releasing a children’s book based on the lyrics.
