Cord-cutters are fuming over YouTube TV price hike. But streaming inflation is here to stay
As a long-time cord-cutter who has diligently pruned my entertainment expenses to keep my budget in check, I find myself once again grappling with the irony of rising programming costs. Just when I thought I had mastered the art of balancing streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video (not to mention AppleTV, HBO, and Paramount), YouTube TV decides to jack up their monthly fee by 14%.
Remember all that money you were going to save by canceling your cable TV subscription?
People who have chosen to cancel traditional television services (cord-cutters) are once more confronting the increasing expenses of programming, as YouTube TV announced on Thursday that they will be raising their monthly subscription price by approximately 14%, from its current rate of $73.99 to $82.99, starting in January.
It’s no surprise that numerous disgruntled customers vented on social media following the announcement of yet another price hike for YouTube TV, which is touted as an affordable substitute for conventional multi-channel service providers.
Chris Bakke expressed his satisfaction in 2018 when he chose to cancel his $89 monthly cable subscription. Now, he’s spending less with services like YouTube TV ($83/mo), Netflix ($23/mo), Disney+ ($16/mo), Paramount ($13/mo), Prime ($15/mo), AppleTV ($10/mo), and HBO ($21/mo).
A significant number of YouTube TV’s 8 million users rely on the platform as a budget-friendly solution for accessing live broadcast and cable channels, in addition to their preferred streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. YouTube TV is particularly favored by sports enthusiasts who have cut the cord on traditional cable but wish to maintain access to live sports.
The price increase takes effect just as the NFL season heads into the playoffs, which attract some of the largest TV audiences of the year ahead of the biggest TV event of all, the Super Bowl, on Feb. 9.

69-year-old mathematician retiree, Karl Rudnick, from Solana Beach, California, has just purchased a new residence near Minneapolis, primarily to be closer to his beloved relatives.
Following YouTube TV’s announcement regarding an increase in their pricing, viewers have chosen to leave Community Notes, highlighting that the cost has gone up by a significant 137% since the service debuted in 2017. The most recent price adjustment took place in March of 2023.
YouTube TV admitted that escalating prices might be unaffordable for some of its users, and they provided a link on their platform for customers to put their subscriptions on hold or terminate them.
Furious viewers swamped the YouTube TV fan group’s Facebook page with grievances, leading some participants to request that the moderator disable commenting due to the high volume of complaints.
Alan Hulings expressed that we’re supporting their poor choice of financially backing the NFL SUNDAY TICKET.
In 2023, YouTube TV has reached a deal with the NFL to air out-of-market Sunday games, costing them $2.5 billion annually. This is a $1 billion increase from what DirecTV previously paid. For YouTube subscribers, the Sunday Ticket package will come at an extra charge of $379 per year.
On their social media platform, they shared a clip demonstrating that customers trying to discontinue the service receive a discount to stay, postponing a $10 price hike for a period of six months.
YouTube TV did not respond to a request for comment.
Just like YouTube, Disney has decided to increase their subscription costs. They’ve bumped up the prices for their streaming services: Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. The combined bundle of Hulu Live TV (which includes live channels) and all three Disney streaming services now costs $82.99 per month.
