Barry Manilow shared a health update with his 118,000 Instagram followers on Friday, revealing he’s been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The 82-year-old singer from Copacabana shared a selfie with fans to let them know he’s recovering, after sharing his health update in late December.
Sharing a photo taken in his hospital bed, the hitmaker captioned, ‘Better Today!’
In the photo, Barry Manilow was seen relaxing with a gentle smile, wearing a green hospital gown that peeked out from above.
Melanie Taylor, a backup singer, publicly showed her support for the artist, writing ‘That’s my boss y’all! He’s making it through the rain! Love you B!’ along with a prayer emoji.
And drummer Matt Sorum added, ‘Heal up Barry, much love.’

The musician recently told his fans he had a cancerous growth in his left lung and would be having surgery to remove it.
He noted at the time that he would not have to undergo chemo or radiation.
He said his doctor recommended an MRI because he’d had two long-lasting cases of bronchitis, each lasting several weeks.
Last month, I shared on Instagram that even after recovering from bronchitis and returning to performing at the Westgate Las Vegas, my doctor wanted to be extra sure everything was alright, so they ordered an MRI.
He added that it was ‘pure luck’ that the spot was discovered early.
As a lifestyle expert, I always tell people to be proactive about their health. It’s really common to have small spots on your lungs – we call them lung nodules – and thankfully, most of the time they’re nothing to worry about. However, because lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer, it’s super important to get any nodule checked out by a doctor, just to be safe. The Mayo Clinic emphasizes this, and I completely agree – early detection is key!
Barry Manilow has been a smoker for many years, and recently switched to vaping. He revealed in a 2012 interview with the London Evening Standard that he started smoking at the young age of nine.
He was spotted vaping in Palm Springs just weeks ago in photos obtained by Daily Mail.

Barry Manilow announced on Instagram on December 22nd that he’s taking time off to get better.
I’m sharing some difficult news: now that the Christmas Gift Of Love concerts are finished, I need to have surgery to remove a spot. The doctors don’t think it’s spread, and they’re running tests to be sure. Thankfully, I won’t need chemotherapy or radiation – just rest, chicken soup, and plenty of ‘I Love Lucy’!
The performer had planned to begin a US tour in January 2026, with shows scheduled in cities like Orlando, Tampa, Charleston, Greensboro, and Columbus.
I’ll need a month to recover, which unfortunately means we have to postpone the January concerts at the arena. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this causes to your plans.
Barry Manilow announced he’ll be performing again in February, predicting it will be a festive event. He also wished everyone a happy Christmas and New Year, and reminded people to get tested if they experience any symptoms of illness.
Over ten years ago, he told the London Evening Standard about his long-time smoking habit. He explained that he’d been smoking since the age of nine, continuing for thirty years.
I was raised in Brooklyn, but I stopped performing for about 15 to 20 years. Recently, I started playing again – my band and I performed at a small club in Las Vegas, and someone offered me a cigarette, which felt like a sign that I was back in the music scene.
