Constance Hall’s dire warning to fans as her online fashion business goes bust
As I reflect on Constance’s heartfelt post, it’s clear that she’s been navigating a tumultuous journey for quite some time now. Seven years of running a business can wear even the most resilient souls down, and it seems like Constance has reached her breaking point.
Constance Hall has had to alert her followers with a serious advisory, following her decision to voluntarily place her online clothing brand, Queen The Label, under temporary bankruptcy protection.
In the role of a devoted follower, I found myself surprised and a bit bewildered when, on a Thursday, the mother of six, aged 40, shared on her Facebook page that the brand had ceased operations. Yet, it was quite astonishing to observe that even amid this news, some followers continued placing orders at the store.
Instead, she requested her supporters to refrain from purchasing stocks through her site, as she was unable to fulfill the orders and provide refunds when necessary.
She quickly responded, “Guys, I’d appreciate if you didn’t purchase stocks related to my company right now.”
Two orders have arrived, but unfortunately, I’m unable to fulfill or issue refunds for these orders as I don’t have the authority to handle the funds in any way.
As a seasoned copywriter with years of experience under my belt, I’ve encountered my fair share of challenges when working with clients who manage their own websites. In this particular case, I found myself stumped by a recurring issue – every product draft I meticulously crafted kept getting reactivated for some inexplicable reason. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t deactivate the site because it wasn’t mine to begin with.
Yet, a state of confusion arose when numerous orders poured in, forcing Constance into a flurry of activity to block them and process refunds from accounts that she typically avoids handling.
I followed up with another urgent plea in my post, stating: ‘I’ve noticed Queens’ website acting strangely, showing items as available when they’re actually not.’
I’m working urgently to process refunds for the orders that keep slipping through, even though it’s not my usual task to manage accounts directly.
Due to recent developments, I’m unfortunately unable to ship any items from Queen. If it were possible, I would certainly have held a going-out-of-business sale.
‘I’m not the owner of the website so I can’t deactivate it or do anything it looks.’
Merely a few hours prior to her grave warning, Constance disclosed that she would be closing down her business on Queen Street, having been under immense stress for the past seven years.
In a long-winded post, Constance said she ‘dreaded’ breaking the news, and that administrators will be coming in to sell her remaining stock and repossess her car.
She informed her 1.3 million followers that she had voluntarily placed Queen The Label into the care of an administrator.
As a devoted devotee, I’m grappling with the aftermath of the loss – my cherished subscription base, my prized vehicle, and a significant portion of my initial investment. Yet, in the grand scheme, I recognize these sacrifices as the currency of freedom and tranquility that I so deeply value.
Constance acknowledged that the choice had left her shattered, and it made her seem like a typical case.
“I’m devastated to say it all, I built this company with earnings from my own books, and now seeing it collapse feels unbearable,” she continued.
‘I feel like one of those clichés that wins lotto and then has nothing left a decade later.’
Constance disclosed that despite having settled all the company’s bills related to suppliers and salaries, an unpaid loan and tax liability were what ultimately led to the shutdown.
“She mentioned that she believed she could handle both her remaining tax bill and the outstanding loan by organizing a closing-down sale,” was one way to paraphrase the sentence.
Although I consistently pay back more annually than my current debt, unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control, I couldn’t close the most recent sale.
Constance shared that she had been struggling with making a choice for a full week, and the pressure of the circumstance ultimately became too much for her to bear.
After a week of intense anxiety and bafflement regarding tasks I can’t grasp in my work, I was informed that no one should endure the pressure this job imposes on me and my personal life, and I agreed.
Indeed, they were correct. For nearly a decade, I’ve been under excessive pressure, a period where I failed to provide my children with the time they truly needed, a phase when I missed out on enjoying life while the constant fear of financial inadequacy loomed large. However, this state of affairs ends here and now.
Constance had not told “numerous relatives or acquaintances” about it, because for her, closing a business was extremely hard to comprehend.
She expressed that her emotion was difficult to put into words, yet she felt both anxious and exhilarated regarding her upcoming future.
She assured us that she would manage to settle her debts, as they aren’t excessive; moreover, she mentioned that the prolonged divorce trial with her first husband, a British carpenter named Bill Mahon, will be concluded by the end of this year.
I’ve reached a point where it seems I’m preparing to take a deep, liberating breath, having been submerged gradually in a suffocating waters for many years.
Constance additionally informed her followers that although the brand Queen The Label had ceased to exist, her other venture offering home goods and accessories remained operational.
‘The Loverhearts Club isn’t going anywhere,’ she said.
As a small business owner, I find myself juggling multiple roles – from being the creator to the accountant and everything in between. It’s just my family and me, working tirelessly to bring our passion projects to life. The joy we derive from creating each piece is immeasurable, and it’s this sense of fulfillment that keeps us going. However, the absence of a large corporation means that we don’t face the daily pressures and expectations that come with running a big business. Instead, we wake up every morning with the freedom to pursue our dreams and make decisions based on what brings us happiness. While there are challenges, the simplicity and flexibility of our setup allow us to adapt quickly and maintain a work-life balance that larger companies often struggle to achieve.
The controversial blogger ended her post on a high.
She mentioned that she would appear radiant in her garden, feigning a perfectly smooth sail if anyone required her presence, is how she put it.
Constance and partner Denim Cooke share seven children.
