Concerns Grow for Rey’s ‘New Jedi Order’ Movie Future Post Star Wars Celebration

There’s been a lot of talk that Rey’s upcoming “Star Wars” movie, allegedly called “Star Wars: New Jedi Order,” might not actually be happening, but I didn’t feel worried until Star Wars Celebration 2025. Initially announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, it looked like “New Jedi Order” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu” were the main focus among upcoming “Star Wars” movies. However, it turned out that this was true only for the latter, which is set to be the next “Star Wars” film released on May 22, 2026.

As time went on, the fate of the New Jedi Order became increasingly uncertain, particularly when the writer for the movies switched and Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, mentioned she hadn’t seen a script. This was especially surprising given the announcement of Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars movie, titled Star Wars: Starfighter, which was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration 2025. This revelation was one of the biggest surprises among all the announcements at that event. Although I am excited about the new movie, after this announcement at Star Wars Celebration, I can’t help but worry about the future of the New Jedi Order.

At the Star Wars Celebration 2023, Daisy Ridley and her “New Jedi Order” film were the main focus. In essence, it appeared that this movie and Rey seemed to be shaping the future of the franchise in certain aspects, primarily because “New Jedi Order” was confirmed to occur fifteen years after “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in the Star Wars timeline. This meant it would be our farthest journey into the future within the Star Wars universe thus far. Consequently, the stark contrast between Star Wars Celebrations in 2023 and 2025 couldn’t be more evident.

This year, discussions about Rey and the New Jedi Order were scarce throughout the weekend. In contrast, there were numerous updates and announcements regarding other Star Wars movies and series. Surprisingly, little information was given about the development of Rey’s movie, despite many anticipating that New Jedi Order would be the next Star Wars film following The Mandalorian and Grogu. What made this even more puzzling (and concerning) was the apparent shift, as Starfighter appears to have taken the place of Rey’s Star Wars movie in several aspects.

As a seasoned movie critic, I must admit I had been harboring hopes for quite some time that the enigmatic Ryan Gosling might grace the galaxy far, far away in a Star Wars production. In the build-up to Star Wars Celebration 2025, whispers grew louder about Gosling potentially starring in Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film. Given that details about Levy’s movie were scant at best, it seemed more like a tantalizing dream than a concrete possibility. However, the shockwaves reverberated through the cosmos when it was officially announced at Star Wars Celebration that Shawn Levy’s film, titled “Starfighter,” would indeed feature Ryan Gosling and boast a release date of May 28, 2027.

As a seasoned movie critic, I must say that in the galaxy of Star Wars, the upcoming film, Starfighter , seems poised to make a significant mark. Set mere years following The Rise of Skywalker , it appears as though this new production is ready to step into the shoes once filled by New Jedi Order. Indeed, it feels as if the limelight has been passed from one saga to another, and it’s now Starfighter that will shape the narrative of this fresh era in the Star Wars universe. This is a bold move, one that suggests that rather than Rey’s story continuing to unfold, it will be the tale spun by Starfighter that defines this new age in the cosmos of the Force.

When it was announced that Rey’s film was coming out, it appeared nearly certain that this production would mark the first venture after “The Rise of Skywalker.” Given the uncertainty about whether Rey’s tale would extend beyond that movie or what would happen post-sequel trilogy as a whole, the sequels concluded in a manner suggesting Rey as the future of the Jedi. Logically, if the Star Wars story was to progress from there, it seemed fitting to do so with Rey at the helm.

With “Starfighter” scheduled to be released following “The Mandalorian and Grogu” and set after “The Rise of Skywalker”, it is clear that the events in this upcoming film will significantly impact the appearance of the Star Wars galaxy post-First Order (and Final Order). This leaves many intriguing questions about what Rey’s movie may or could encompass now.

I Don’t Think The Movie Is Canceled… But It Won’t Look The Same

Starfighter’s Story Will Undoubtedly Influence What Rey’s Movie Can Do

In truth, I’m not anticipating that the New Jedi Order will be scrapped. Making such a drastic change in the Star Wars universe would be quite significant, and the project has still been mentioned, albeit sparingly. It’s important to clarify that it hasn’t technically been delayed, as there was never an official release date for New Jedi Order in the first place.

However, I do believe that the movie titled Starfighter may not deliver the New Jedi Order we had anticipated. For one, whispers suggest that Gosling’s character might possess Force abilities, hinted at by a brief flash of what appears to be the Jedi Order symbol (or perhaps even just the lightsaber from that symbol) in the title clip. With this possibility, the idea of the New Jedi Order could undergo change with Starfighter. It remains unclear when Star Wars will provide definite information about Star Wars: New Jedi Order, but after Star Wars Celebration 2025, I’m more intrigued and apprehensive than ever.
