In 2024, Robert E. Howard’s diverse characters collaborated in an extraordinary fashion, uniting for the Battle of the Black Stone. This epic battle was spearheaded by none other than Conan the Barbarian himself, who led a team of time-traveling heroes in a valiant effort to protect all existence. The saga resumes in a fresh chapter titled Scourge of the Serpent, where Conan joins forces with even more renowned heroes from various eras.
On numerous occasions, Conan encountered the followers of Set, an evil snake deity who wields power over the nation of Stygia. These servants are also linked to another ancient malevolence – the Serpent Men, who predated even the era of the Hyborian Age. A prophecy foretells that three heroes from different epochs will confront the evil of the Serpent Men. Among these chosen few is Conan, the barbarian mercenary, who is destined to play a significant role in this battle against darkness.

What legends are Conan the Barbarian teaming up with?
In Scourge of the Serpent #1, a sneak peek showcases not one, but two characters created by Robert E. Howard other than Conan. The main focus of this preview is centered around a storyline inspired by “The Shadow Kingdom.” Herein lies the character of Brule the Spear-Slayer, a Pict warrior sent on a mission to protect King Kull from the deadly Serpent Men assassins. Their aim was to seize control over the land of Valusia before it was too late.
Skilled in various weapons, particularly the spear, Brule was also knowledgeable about magical lore. He possessed a spell that dispelled the illusions the Serpent Men used to disguise themselves as humans. Later, Brule became one of Kull’s most reliable advisors and trusted companions on numerous expeditions.

In the sneak peek, we also see another character joining Conan and Brule, who is believed to be Professor John Kirowan. Known as a 20th-century academic with an interest in the occult, he first appeared in the tale “The Children of the Night.” Pursuing his studies for selfless reasons initially, Kirowan’s crusade took a personal turn when a malevolent sorcerer tainted the only woman he ever cared about using black magic.
John Kirowan is also associated with the lore of Conan, as his 1934 tale, “The Haunter of the Ring,” features a cursed ring which he refers to as one that has been passed down through the corrupt cults of sorcerers since the ancient times of Stygia. This strongly implies it is indeed the Serpent Ring of Set, previously owned by Conan’s primary adversary Thoth-Amon.
Conan: Scourge of the Serpent #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on September 24, 2025.
