Conan O’Brien reveals bizarre Oscar restrictions you never knew existed

Conan O’Brien has revealed two bizarre restrictions regarding the Oscars statuette.

Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast Conan Needs A Friend, the presenter revealed that he had several ideas for a promotional video ahead of hosting the 2025 Academy Awards earlier this month.

However, two of his ideas were shut down due to the strict guidelines, which say that the statuette must not be presented horizontally or be wearing clothes.

Conan proposed an amusing idea: showing him alongside a towering 9-foot-tall Oscar statue as if they were a regular couple at home.

“At one point, I thought wouldn’t it be great if it’s just on the couch? Let’s lay it on a really big couch and I’ll be vacuuming and say, ‘Could you at least lift your feet? Or could you at least get up and help? Load the dishwasher?’ We wanted to do it and they just said, ‘No, no no, that can’t happen’,” he said.

One individual representing the academy made an unexpected statement: “Oscar will never lie flat.” That truly astounded me. It’s as if I stumbled upon the femur of Saint Peter. This feels like a sacred artifact.

Additionally, O’Brien proposed dressing the figurine as a housewife; however, the Academy responded by stating that Oscar should remain bare, as Oscar has always been depicted without any clothes.

The 2025 Oscars saw Mikey Madison take home the Oscar for Best Actress and Adrien Brody for Best Actor, while Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor and Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress. Best Picture went to Anora.

Brody’s speech at the ceremony set the record as the longest in Oscars history, clocking in at a whopping five minutes and 40 seconds.
