The world of late night television has been going through a lot of changes recently. In July, CBS announced it was cancelling *The Late Show*, a decision linked to financial concerns but also following host Stephen Colbert’s criticism of Paramount’s settlement with Donald Trump during merger talks. Then, ABC temporarily removed *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* from its 2025 schedule after Kimmel made controversial remarks about Tyler Robinson, the person suspected of shooting Charlie Kirk. Now, Conan O’Brien is speaking out about what’s happening to his fellow late night hosts.
Conan O’Brien was a late night talk show host for nearly 30 years, first on Late Night, then with his short-lived stint on The Tonight Show, and finally with Conan on TBS for over a decade. These days O’Brien is keeping busy with projects like his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and his HBO Max subscription-exclusive travel show Conan O’Brien Must Go, but today he went on Instagram to comment on what’s been happening with late night TV recently, writing:
The potential consequences faced by Jimmy Kimmel for speaking out against the administration – including threats to other late-night hosts – should worry people across the political spectrum. It’s simply unacceptable, and anyone who values fairness should recognize that.
Though no longer hosting his own show, Conan O’Brien continues to support fellow late-night hosts and has voiced concern over recent changes in the industry. Jimmy Kimmel’s show is currently on hold, and he’s one of several celebrities – including Ben Stiller, Wanda Sykes, and Tatiana Maslany (who has urged people to cancel Disney+ subscriptions, since ABC is owned by Disney) – to publicly react. Beyond Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, former President Trump attacked Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers on Truth Social, calling them “total losers” with “horrible” ratings on NBC.
The news about Jimmy Kimmel came quickly after Stephen Colbert publicly thanked Kimmel for his help before winning an Emmy. Since then, Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and Jon Stewart have all addressed Kimmel’s suspension on their shows. Recent reports suggest that some Disney executives were surprised when *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* was temporarily pulled off the air, as they had advised CEO Bob Iger against doing so.
There are discussions happening about the future of *Jimmy Kimmel Live!*, but finding a solution is proving difficult. In other late-night news, Stephen Colbert is set to continue hosting *The Late Show* through May 2026, and *Conan O’Brien Must Go* has been picked up for another season, making it a third.
