Mark Mitchell, an Australian comedian famous for his role as Con the Fruiterer on the popular 1980s show The Comedy Company, has surprised his fans with a dramatic change in appearance.
The 71-year-old performer, famous for his hilarious role as the playful, dedicated fruit seller on the Channel Ten show, now looks very different.
Con’s distinctive look – his dark hair, thin mustache, and black apron – is a thing of the past. We also won’t hear his famous sayings, ‘bewdiful’ and ‘coupla days,’ which everyone came to know and use.
Mitchell recently looked very different in an interview with the Australian comedy group Sooshi Mango on YouTube.
He now has long, white hair that reaches his shoulders, along with a thick, full beard. He’s updated his style with a blue dress shirt and jeans.
Despite the transformation, the beloved comic still showed off his trademark cheeky grin.
Mark is a well-known and popular comedian in Australia. He’s appeared in several famous shows and movies, such as Round the Twist, Inspector Gadget 2, and Neighbours.
In 2020, the actor criticized the practice of removing older TV shows because they don’t meet current standards of political correctness.
Mark argued that comedy shows like Little Britain and Summer Heights High should be viewed in the context of when they were made, rather than judged by today’s standards. He told The Herald Sun that condemning them now isn’t fair because they were a reflection of the time.
From 1988 to 1990, Mark played the role of a Greek-Australian grocer and his wife, Marika, on the television show The Comedy Company.
Although many of his jokes wouldn’t be considered funny now, Mark believed he was seen as a role model by Australian immigrants back then.
‘Let those who wish to condemn Con, now, go for it,’ Mark told the publication.
I’ll always cherish the wonderful times I shared with both the audience and the Australian migrant community – those memories will never fade.
‘For whom Con was a, dare I say, hero in his own suburban, even mundane way.’
Mark described Con as a prime example of a successful, new Australian who thrived, built a good life, and enriched the suburban community with his vibrant personality and zest for life.
According to a poll in a Greek newspaper, his character, Con, was very popular with Greek Australians.
Mark, known for his role as Harold Gribble in the popular children’s show Round the Twist, believes it’s important to consider the time period when watching comedy from the past.
