“Completely different” ’90s thriller remake confirms release date with first-look images

The upcoming remake of the ‘90s thriller “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” has officially announced its release date, along with some fresh visuals to whet our appetite.

In the movie, a nanny joins a suburban family, yet it swiftly emerges that her intentions are not entirely honest or genuine.

In this production, Maika Monroe takes on the role of Polly, the nanny, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead from “10 Cloverfield Lane” and Raúl Castillo known for his work in “Looking” play a couple named Caitlin and Miguel. Additionally, Martin Starr, a familiar face from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Spider-Man” trilogy, is also featured within the cast.

The newly released images primarily highlight our main female characters, yet they include a glimpse of a sleeping infant under the watchful eye of Polly, creating an eerie atmosphere through strategic use of light and shadow.

The remake will release on Hulu in the US on 22 October, right before Halloween.

We don’t have a U.K. release date confirmed yet, but similar Hulu projects like “Alien: Earth” are likely to appear on Disney+ in the U.K. at around the same time (keep in mind that due to time zones it might be early hours of the next day). So let’s keep our fingers crossed that this will also happen soon!

According to director Garza Cervera, it’s clear that the script for the remake features a significantly new storyline compared to the original. This new version is expected to include several surprising and thrilling moments for fans who are familiar with the original production.

In a conversation with the media outlet, Cervera revealed that the location has shifted from Seattle to Los Angeles, the characters’ histories are richer and their moral compasses aren’t as straightforward.

She stated, “That method seemed to be the most respectful way to preserve the essence, rather than attempting a complete re-creation.” Instead, we’ve crafted a distinct type of suspenseful storyline. In truth, it leans towards a gradual build-up.

As a game character, I find myself often navigating complex narratives where neither antagonist nor protagonist are purely good or evil – more like intricate puzzles with shades of gray. That’s exactly what our writers have done with these two leading ladies, as explained by Cervera.

I appreciate characters who, despite their adversarial role, have moments where you can understand their perspective. It’s fascinating how these roles often play out in a compelling dance, much like the balance of two opposing yet complementary forces.

On October 22, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle will be available for streaming on Hulu in the U.S., with the UK release date still pending.
