Now available on Netflix, the British mystery drama A Mother’s Son has been praised as a gripping series, often compared to Broadchurch. With stars Nicola Walker and Martin Clunes, it’s perfect for a weekend binge.
This new drama, from the creator of Unforgotten, Chris Lang, centers around a quiet town in Suffolk that’s been shaken by the murder of a young schoolgirl, Lorraine Mullary, played by Juliet York.
Rosie Cutler (Hermione Norris) and Ben Banks (Clunes) and their children have just moved to the neighborhood. When an investigation starts into the murder of Lorraine, Rosie starts to worry that her son, Jamie (Alexander Arnold), might be involved.

Olivia Walker leads the series as Detective Constable Sue Upton. The cast also features Ellie Bamber, Paul McGann, Antonia Clarke, and Annabelle Apsion, and the series is directed by Edward Bazalgette.
The series A Mother’s Son, which first aired in 2012, is now streaming on Netflix in the UK. Both parts of the show were added to the platform today. You can also find it on ITVX if you prefer.

I’ve been following this mystery drama, and even though it hasn’t gotten a ton of attention from professional critics, most regular viewers seem to really like it! Right now, it has a 6.8 out of 10 rating on IMDb, based on over 1700 reviews, which is pretty good, if you ask me.
One viewer described A Mother’s Son as a truly captivating watch. They particularly praised Chris Lang’s writing, noting the realistic dialogue and how the mystery kept them guessing about the perpetrator for most of the film’s runtime – almost an hour and fifty minutes out of two hours.
The actors were all excellent. Martin Clunes showed a range I hadn’t noticed in him before, playing Rosie’s second husband, Ben. He provided a great contrast to Paul McGann, who perfectly portrayed her first husband, David.
One viewer felt the show had a similar feel to Broadchurch, especially at the beginning. They praised the acting of Martin Clunes, Joe Norris, and Mark McGann, and highlighted young Alexander Arnold’s performance as Jamie as being particularly good.

I saw another fan comment that they loved how tight and fast-paced the show was, only lasting two hours. They were so happy it didn’t drag on with unnecessary stuff, confusing side stories, or plot holes! They really praised the characters and the acting too, and I totally agree!
Netflix has recently added several new series, including a two-part mystery drama. Also available now are the Spanish medical drama Breathless and the Dutch crime drama Amsterdam Empire, both of which arrived earlier this week.
A Mother’s Son is streaming on Netflix and ITVX now.
