Comedy Central extends Jon Stewart’s ‘The Daily Show’ run through 2026

Even though Jon Stewart’s sharp and critical humor sometimes made his network executives uncomfortable, Comedy Central has decided to keep him on the air through December 2026.

Paramount, the company that owns the channel, said Monday that Jon Stewart will keep hosting “The Daily Show” on Mondays and also work as an executive producer until the end of next year.

The news team will keep sharing the hosting responsibilities from Tuesday to Thursday. The details of their contract haven’t been made public.

According to Comedy Central manager Ari Pearce, Jon Stewart is continuing to make his signature style of comedy even better with his return. Pearce stated the network is happy to back Stewart and the talented team working on the show, praising their insightful humor and commentary that have become hallmarks of The Daily Show.

Jon Stewart is continuing to make news since returning to ‘The Daily Show,’ most recently with his interview of Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan.

John Stewart’s contract was renewed almost four months after CBS, which like Stewart’s show is owned by Paramount, announced it was canceling Stephen Colbert’s late-night program at the end of the current season. This decision came shortly after Colbert publicly criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Donald Trump, calling it a blatant bribe related to a lawsuit over a segment on “60 Minutes.”

Paramount reached a settlement with Donald Trump to get the Trump administration’s approval for its sale to Skydance Media and RedBird Capital Partners. CBS claims the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s show was due to financial reasons, but many are skeptical and suspect political motivations.

Ellison bought Paramount in August. Stewart has playfully suggested he could also be let go as the company attempts to move towards more moderate political views.

The company started significant layoffs last week, initially eliminating 1,000 jobs. They plan to cut another 1,000 positions in the next few weeks, aiming to reduce their overall workforce by 10%.

Jon Stewart, who left Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’ in 2015, made a highly anticipated return to the stage on Monday, receiving a warm welcome from the audience and immediately addressing questions about the upcoming elections.

Stewart came back as host in February 2024, after being away for nine years. He previously hosted the show for 16 years before stepping down in 2015, and his contract was about to end.

Trevor Noah hosted the show until 2022, when he decided to leave. After that, a variety of guest hosts filled in, such as Kal Penn, Charlamagne tha God, Sarah Silverman, and Michelle Wolf.

At a recent cultural festival, when asked by The New Yorker if he planned to continue his work, Stewart said, “We’re trying to make that happen.”

In addition to the previously announced hosts, Ronny Chieng, Josh Johnson, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic will also rotate through hosting duties, alongside Troy Iwata and Grace Kuhlenschmidt.
