Many authors hope to see their novels adapted into films with famous actors, but Colleen Hoover has found it difficult to share her success with It Ends With Us due to the legal issues surrounding the movie. After the film came out in August 2024, Blake Lively accused the director and her co-star, Justin Baldoni, of creating a toxic and harassing work environment during filming. This led to a public and complicated legal battle, with both Lively and Baldoni accusing each other of damaging their reputations and starting a smear campaign.
Colleen Hoover recently shared with Elle that she’s saddened by the real-life impact recent events have had on the people involved, noting that some actors’ careers have been significantly affected. She’s choosing to stay away from the drama and negativity, explaining she has her own experiences she could share, but doesn’t want to contribute to the conflict or diminish anyone else. Hoover prefers to remain silent and allow others to form their own opinions.
Hoover explained she was particularly hurt because the book drew from her mother’s life experiences, and now, with the ongoing legal battle, she doesn’t want to suggest anyone read it.
I’m really struggling with how things turned out after the film was released. It feels like the fallout has been even more painful for her than losing my dad, especially seeing all the negativity. The legal battle has really taken over everything, and honestly, I’m almost ashamed to talk about having written it. When people ask about my work, I just say I’m a writer and try to avoid specifics. Hopefully, with time, things will get easier for everyone involved. I used to be very proud of the book, and I still am, but I’m less willing to discuss it publicly now. I might even need to talk to a therapist about all of this, I’m not sure.
Colleen Hoover Has More in the Works for 2026

Colleen Hoover
Even with the recent controversy around her novel It Ends With Us, Colleen Hoover continues to be successful. Her book Regretting You was recently adapted into a film starring Mckenna Grace, Mason Thames, Dave Franco, and Allison Williams, and premiered in October. While critics didn’t love it, general audiences gave it a strong 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter.
Colleen Hoover has announced that her next novel, Woman Down, will be released in January 2026. The book, described as a thriller, follows an author seeking inspiration in seclusion who discovers something unexpected and surreal. Fans can also look forward to the movie adaptation of Reminders of Him, starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, which is scheduled to premiere in theaters on March 13, 2026.
“Writing books pays the bills. That’s always going to be my priority and what I most enjoy.”
