Colin Firth’s ex-wife, eco-fashion campaigner Livia Firth, has dramatically handed back her MBE.
In a recent social media video, she was filmed angrily ripping up a prestigious certificate, stating she was returning it to St James’s Palace as a protest against what she describes as Britain’s willingness to concede to US President Donald Trump.
Livia Firth, a 56-year-old activist and ex-wife of actor Colin Firth (they were married for 22 years until 2019), announced on Instagram this Wednesday that she has given back an award she received six years ago for her work in the fashion world.
Livia said she couldn’t accept the honor because she was concerned by the way the US president seemed to be flattered and treated with excessive respect during his recent trip to the UK.
She explained in her letter that she was giving up her honour because she couldn’t accept the conflicting demands of her situation. She felt forced to compromise her principles and was essentially returning the recognition to the authorities who granted it.
Okay, so Livia Firth, you guys, *the* Livia Firth – she basically invented ethical fashion in Hollywood with that amazing ‘Green Carpet Challenge,’ getting everyone from Meryl Streep to Emma Watson to wear sustainable gowns – well, she just posted the most shocking video. She was holding her MBE, her *medal* from the Queen, and then… she ripped up the actual certificate! I couldn’t believe my eyes. It’s… intense, honestly, but totally Livia, you know? She’s always making a statement.

I was so excited to see she posted pictures of the medal, still in its box, and a handwritten letter! It was a little funny though – the date on the letter said October 24, 2025, when it’s actually September 24th today. A small mistake, but it just makes the post feel even more personal!
In her message, she criticized Britain for making Donald Trump appear acceptable through what she called a weak and fearful attempt to avoid conflict.
As I’m writing this, Donald Trump is speaking at the UN General Assembly, and it’s deeply concerning to see his harmful and divisive language being given a platform.
Last week’s events didn’t reflect the principles I believed King Charles supported, or the values those principles represent. Instead, it felt like a disappointing and weak attempt to please someone who threatens both the environment and the well-being of the world’s most vulnerable populations.
Livia Firth, an Italian filmmaker and entrepreneur, received an honor from the British Empire five years ago for her efforts to help garment workers worldwide. She is also a co-founder of Eco-Age, a leading company focused on sustainability.
Although she felt uneasy about the history of colonialism, she gratefully accepted the award, dedicating it to all the factory workers and activists she’d fought for alongside.
In her letter, she explained that while she opposes the British Empire and its harmful legacy, she accepted the honor to represent the garment worker activists who had taught and encouraged her.
I’ve always been so impressed with King Charles – even when he was the Prince of Wales – because of his lifelong commitment to fighting for social and environmental causes. Livia really highlighted that, and it’s something I’ve personally always admired about him.

She explained that she could no longer support the monarch due to the way his government handled the situation with Donald Trump, despite her continued respect for him. She signed the letter using her full name, Livia Giuggioli (Firth).
Livia was born in Rome and initially worked in film. In 1996, while working as a production assistant on the BBC series Nostromo, she met Colin Firth. They married in 1997 and later had two sons, Luca, now 24, and Matteo, 22.
While married, Livia often appeared with the star of The King’s Speech at public events, and she used her visibility to promote eco-friendly clothing choices.
After 22 years of marriage, the Firths divorced in 2019. The split followed a scandal where Livia had an affair with Italian journalist Marco Brancaccia during a brief separation between 2015 and 2016.
Despite getting back together, their relationship couldn’t recover from the affair and all the resulting problems, including Livia’s early claim that Marco was stalking her, and they ultimately split up permanently.
Even after her breakup with the actor, Livia remains a highly respected and impactful advocate for environmental causes.
Honestly, I’ve been following her work for years, and it’s just incredible! She doesn’t just *talk* about making fashion better, she actually *does* it. She’s consulted with all the biggest luxury brands, helping them become more sustainable, which is amazing. And it’s not just talk – she’s actually spoken at the UN about workers’ rights! But what really gets me are her documentaries. They’re so powerful and expose the really dark side of fast fashion – the exploitation that no one wants to see. She’s a total game-changer, seriously.
