Colin Farrell’s “dazzling” psychological thriller that ‘keeps you hooked’ has just landed on Netflix

Colin Farrell’s latest movie, the psychological thriller Ballad of a Small Player, is now available on Netflix. It tells the story of a gambler on the road who’s being chased by a relentless detective.

Good news for anyone who’s been waiting – the movie is finally on Netflix! I just saw it dropped today, so I’m gonna be checking it out!

Based on Lawrence Osborne’s novel, Ballad of a Small Player centers on Lord Doyle, who finds his hidden past and financial troubles resurfacing. While trying to escape his problems in Macau, he meets someone who could potentially offer him a way out.

According to a summary of the plot, Doyle travels to Macao hoping to start a new life, believing he can disappear as an unknown outsider. However, Cynthia Blithe (played by Tilda Swinton) recognizes him and knows his past. A kind casino worker might offer Doyle a way out of his increasing troubles, but the story leaves you wondering if he can truly escape.

The film also features Tilda Swinton and has a 55% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Deadline described it as a “dizzying and dazzling fever dream,” and HeyUGuys noted that it “manages to keep you hooked.”

In a review, The Observer described the film as a captivating, though unsettling, portrayal of someone spiraling into self-destruction. They particularly praised Colin Farrell’s performance, noting how he skillfully shed layers of his persona – accents and even his character’s appearance – to reveal a man haunted by his past and driven by present desires.

Screen International criticized the film as being initially fun and energetic, but ultimately undermined by its own overly ambitious story. They described it as playfully shallow, enjoying the extreme emotional state of its main character, but noted that these attempts at depth eventually caused the narrative to collapse.

According to The A.V. Club, the nuanced storytelling that director Edward Berger often aims for is overshadowed by his overly simplistic and flashy style.

Directed by Greg Berger, who previously made Conclave, and written by Rowan Joffé, known for 28 Weeks Later, the film also features performances by Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, and Alex Jennings.

Ballad of a Small Player is available to stream now on Netflix.
