Colin Farrell Breaks Silence on Shelved DCU Film: “It’s Really, Really Good”

Colin Farrell recently discussed the now-canceled movie Sgt. Rock. While already known for playing The Penguin in The Batman and its upcoming HBO Max spin-off, he was also set to star in a film based on the WWII hero Sgt. Rock. The project was quickly developed but ultimately canceled by DC Studios CEO James Gunn in April 2025.

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast with Josh Horowitz, Colin Farrell discussed the Sgt. Rock movie script, calling it “fantastic” and wondering about its current status. He mentioned having talked with director Luca Guadagnino about the project, but admitted he doesn’t know what’s happening with it now. When asked if he was still interested without Guadagnino involved, Farrell responded…

I originally planned to work on this with Luca. We discussed it a few times and had great conversations about it. I’m not sure what happened to it, but it really needs to be finished. It’s fantastic, and there’s some truly excellent material in there.

James Gunn Might Have Revealed What Really Happened With ‘Sgt. Rock’

DC Comics

Colin Farrell recently spoke about the script for the cancelled film Sgt. Rock, offering a different perspective than what James Gunn previously hinted at. Gunn had mentioned, in a July 2025 interview with NPR, that he cancelled a DC Studios project due to script issues. While Gunn didn’t name the film, many believed it was Sgt. Rock because he noted it already had a director and writer attached – Luca Guadagnino was set to direct a script by Justin Kuritzkes. Gunn explained that…

We approved a movie project and received second and third drafts of the screenplay, but it wasn’t improving. It remained stuck and wasn’t working, despite having a talented director and writer. I realized we couldn’t make the film because it simply wasn’t good enough. Just because of the people involved didn’t mean the script was strong. I knew everyone would be disappointed with the final product, and it would reflect poorly on all of us. So, I decided to cancel the project altogether.

Not much is known about the script for Sgt. Rock that Luca Guadagnino and Drake Kuritzkes wrote. There were reports it would have followed Sgt. Rock and his company, Easy Company, on a quest to find the legendary Spear of Destiny, with Mikey Madison (from Anora) playing a French Resistance fighter named Mademoiselle Marie. James Gunn has mentioned the project is still being considered at DC Studios, but Guadagnino has moved on to other work. In fact, his recent film, After the Hunt, includes a Sgt. Rock poster as a nod to the movie that likely won’t be made.

Despite the changes at DC, Farrell will still be involved. He’s confirmed to return as Oz Cobb in The Batman – Part II, though the future of The Penguin series is uncertain. While there’s still a possibility he could play Sgt. Rock at some point, that project has been in development for decades with no clear path forward, and it likely won’t happen anytime soon.
