Cole Hauser Reveals Shocking Truth About His Father After His Death
Over the weekend, we lost Wings Hauser, the father of the renowned actor from Yellowstone, Cole Hauser, at the age of 78.
Cole has not publicly discussed his father’s passing yet, who initially made a name for himself as a musician and vocalist, later transitioning into a successful character actor starting from the late 1970s. However, Cole has shared insights about their complex bond in previous interviews.
Although they both worked in the same field, Cole openly acknowledged in a recent rediscovered interview that Wings had been largely absent during his upbringing, having left him and his mother, Cass Warner, at the age of only two following their divorce.
In the early 2000s, the actor shared that it took him until he was 15 years old to establish contact with his father once more.
In a 2021 interview with Cowboys & Indians magazine, the 49-year-old actor shared details about the moment he discovered his father’s identity for the first time.
In conversation with film critic and historian Joe Leydon, Hauser disclosed that he was around nine or ten years of age when he initially spotted his own name, “Wings Hauser,” on TV.

At the time, he didn’t even make the connection that the actor on screen had been his father.
After the movie ended, I noticed Wings Hauser in the credits. Excitedly, I went to my mother’s room and told her, “Mom, I just saw a man on TV named Wings Hauser,” as Cole remembered.
She stared at me and exclaimed, “Wow!” To which I replied, “Indeed, I’ve seen someone like that.” Then she suggested, “Let’s discuss that topic instead.
‘And so, she explained to me who he was. And that’s how I found out about my dad,‘ he added.
Five years later than the year 2002, Hauser mentioned during an interview with Film Freak Central, it would be the time when he and his father would finally meet.
Although I didn’t spend my childhood with him, later on, when I relocated to Los Angeles, he allowed me to stay with him for a year. During that time, we had the chance to understand each other better.
Hauser mentioned that Wings didn’t significantly shape the types of roles he sought after, and he highlighted the stark contrast in their respective career paths.
However, he discovered that his father was an invaluable source of knowledge about the acting profession and show business as he navigated through the industry at its early stages.

Despite their early estrangement, the two appear to have had a closer relationship later in life.
Cole shared with Cowboys & Indians that his father is an enormous admirer of his notable work, Yellowstone – his biggest production yet – which concluded its final episode in December, marking the exit of lead actor Kevin Costner following the initial part of the fifth and last season.
He clearly takes great pride in my accomplishments within it,” he stated, pointing out Wings’ strong connection to the series, as he had a “deep-rooted affection” for it, given his inner cowboy spirit.
The Hauser clan, originating from Montana, is comprised entirely of residents there. Hence, he feels a strong connection to it, as he has relatives residing in Helena, Livingstone, and various other parts of the state, explained Hauser.
1992 marked Hauser’s first appearance on the big screen, and the following year, he appeared in a minor role in the acclaimed period film “Dazed and Confused.” This movie became known for showcasing several up-and-coming actors at the beginning of their careers.
Among the actors he worked alongside was Ben Affleck, who he teamed up with again in the 1997 Academy Award-winning film ‘Good Will Hunting’. The screenplay for this movie was jointly penned by Affleck and his co-star, Matt Damon.
In 2023, Affleck playfully expressed on the Bill Simmons Podcast his surprise that his ex-wife Jennifer Lopez was deeply captivated by Yellowstone, specifically the romantic tale between Rip Wheeler, portrayed by Cole, and Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly.
‘I was always mystified that Cole wasn’t a giant movie star,’ Damon added.

During our collaboration with him at the age of 16, it’s a memory that remains vivid. [Ben and I] were on our way back to Boston after wrapping up for the first week, traveling through Cambridge. We joked, “Who is the most talented actor among us?” in an amusing way.
In unison, we exclaimed, “Hauser,” he being an undeniably gifted individual, simply remarkable…and possessing a heart as kind as could be, remarked Damon.
Affleck acknowledged that his longtime friend and co-star delivered an outstanding performance as the Montana ranch foreman and enforcer for Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton III.
‘I think America believes he is Rip,’ Affleck added.
