Cole Brings Plenty's family wants a 'fair investigation' of the '1923' actor's death

As I reflect upon Cole Brings Plenty’s brief yet impactful life, I am deeply moved by the unwavering determination of his family to seek justice for his untimely death. The resilience and strength they display in the face of adversity are truly inspiring.

After Kansas authorities stated that there was no suspicion of wrongdoing in Cole Brings Plenty’s death several months ago, his family has openly contested the findings of the investigation they conducted.

Speaking at the Red Nation Film Festival in Los Angeles on Sunday, Joe Brings Plenty Sr., the late actor’s father, expressed that he continues to investigate and seek answers regarding his son’s circumstances.

At the Beverly Wilshire gathering, the Cheyenne River Sioux tribal leader expressed, “Son, there’s some task ahead of us,” referring to the need for a thorough and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Cole.

On the 5th of April, Cole Brings Plenty was tragically discovered deceased, following a week-long search initiated by his family due to him failing to attend a scheduled Zoom call with his representative. At the time of his passing, he was just 27 years old.

During his speech on Sunday, Joe Brings Plenty Sr. also emphasized the dangerous nature of his son’s activism, stating that it is concerning due to the unpopularity of the Native American cause.

In May of 2023, Cole Brings Plenty teamed up with his uncle Mo Brings Plenty, a co-star from the series “1923”, and other cast members and advisors, urging Congress to scrutinize the historical Native American boarding school policies overseen by the federal government. According to the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition, children of Native descent who were compulsorily taken away from their families and placed in these schools during the late 19th and early 20th centuries experienced physical abuse, sexual assault, cultural eradication, and spiritual disregard.

Joe Brings Plenty Sr. spoke about the Movement for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, which is a campaign addressing the widespread problem of missing and murdered Indigenous women throughout North America. He stated, “The system tends to turn a blind eye when it comes to dealing with Indigenous communities.

In my personal opinion, during my recent movie screening, I found myself questioning the investigation led by Kansas authorities, particularly the Lawrence police, who initially chose to label the central character as a criminal fugitive instead of someone in crisis or possibly a victim. This approach, as Joe Brings Plenty Sr. expressed at Sunday’s event, placed an unwanted spotlight on him that could have been avoided.

Those familiar with him understood the type of person he was,” he asserted, labeling his son as an extraordinary and intellectually gifted individual.

After collaborating with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office for several days, the Lawrence police department announced on April 10 that they found no signs suggesting unnatural causes in the passing of Cole Brings Plenty. They did not reveal the cause of death or any specifics about the autopsy.

Prior to what was believed to be his disappearance, I myself had the chance to witness Cole Brings Plenty at a performance held at the Replay Lounge in Lawrence, Kansas. It was during this show that an unfortunate incident occurred: some spectators claimed that his braids became entangled in a microphone cord, and in an attempt to untangle him, a fellow audience member ended up cutting off his hair without his explicit consent.

On March 31, around 1 a.m., after departing from the bar, Brings Plenty is believed to have headed to a neighboring apartment, as reported by the Lawrence Times. Subsequently, authorities were called due to distress signals of a woman pleading for assistance, according to the Lawrence Police Department’s April 2 Facebook update.

The Lawrence Police Department has provided a sworn statement to the District Attorney for the apprehension of Cole Brings Plenty following an occurrence on Sunday morning at a flat in Lawrence. We’ve singled him out as the possible culprit, have enough reasons to make the arrest, and broadcasted a warning to nearby law enforcement agencies. In their Facebook post, they mentioned that “the suspect escaped before officers got there.

According to police reports, footage from traffic cameras indicated that Cole Brings Plenty departed the city shortly after the incident. They chose not to disclose the woman’s identity who was allegedly involved, although a family friend confirmed that this woman was not the one who had previously cut Cole Brings Plenty’s hair at Replay Lounge.

On the very same day that the police stated no suspicious activity had occurred, the order for his arrest was withdrawn. Approximately a week and a half later, as per court records examined by The Times, a judge in Douglas County District Court decided that the affidavit backing up the warrant (which was never carried out) should stay confidential.

A representative from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office chose not to provide a statement regarding the ongoing investigation into the death, citing a legal directive. In response to The Times’ inquiry, the Lawrence police department did not offer a comment.

Following the announcement of Cole Brings Plenty’s demise on April 5th, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, to which he belonged, demanded a comprehensive investigation into Cole’s disappearance leading up to his death. They also stated that their attorney general would reach out to Kansas authorities to guarantee that this investigation takes place.

According to an April Change.org petition, Cole Brings Plenty, a Native American individual, sadly joins the concerning pattern of violence experienced by Indigenous communities, as they call for justice following his passing.

The petition went on to say: “This isn’t merely a request for justice for an individual; it’s a call to address a system that frequently ignores the struggles faced by our Native American kin.

On Sunday, following Joe Brings Plenty Sr.’s speech, a tribute slide show featuring photographs taken on the set of “1923” was shown in honor of Cole Brings Plenty.

It’s amazing to consider that a young man hailing from South Dakota, who grew up in a place known as Darkside, would one day appear on the silver screen,” the former Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe law enforcement officer expressed during his speech, momentarily overcome with emotion. “His journey has only just begun.
