Cody Simpson surprised people at the ARIA Awards on Wednesday when he revealed his girlfriend, Olympic swimmer Emma McKeon, has taken up a new and unexpected hobby.
The musician, who recently took up competitive swimming, made a fashion statement at Australia’s major music awards show. They sported a ’90s-inspired look with a large brown leather jacket, loose-fitting jeans, and sunglasses.
The 28-year-old, who used to be a swimmer but now sings, later regretted what he wore, telling Angela Bishop he wished he hadn’t worn one particular item.
When asked about potentially retiring from competitive swimming now that he’s focused on music again, Cody jokingly said he just wanted to cool off in a pool because of the heat.
He joked about his fashion choice, admitting the leather jacket wasn’t ideal for the scorching 30-degree heat on the red carpet.
Cody recently shared with Daily Mail a heartwarming detail about how he’s been enjoying time with his girlfriend, Olympic swimmer Emma McKeon. The couple has been together since 2022.

He revealed he’s been giving Emma singing lessons when asked about a possible collaboration between them.
‘She taught me to swim a few years ago so I’m trying to teach her how to sing.’
He added: ‘If we can get there, then we will collaborate, yeah.’
Cody announced he’s getting back into music after taking a break to compete in swimming.
The athlete, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games, revealed he’s rediscovered his love for music, three years after his previous album came out.
I’m really excited to be getting back into music! I’ve been gathering a lot of new material, and it’s deeply personal – I’m writing about my life experiences and everything I’ve gone through so far. It’s a really reflective process, and I can’t wait to share it.
When it comes to the sound, I’m really building on all my life experiences. It’s like everything I’ve ever done musically has come together in this work.
He shared that his latest music is the most personal and thoughtful work he’s ever created.

He explained that the work feels like a culmination of everything he’s experienced, a way to embrace all sides of himself while still feeling new and relevant.
I’ve rediscovered my love for swimming. It feels fresh and exciting, which is amazing because I thought I’d lost my passion for it. It’s really invigorating to feel this enthusiasm again.
He added he was working hard to ensure his new music was released early next year.
Cody first became well-known in 2009 when he started posting videos of himself singing on YouTube, and this helped him begin his career as a musician.
In 2010, the singer relocated to Los Angeles to work with Atlantic Records. They’ve recorded albums at Village Studios in West Los Angeles and recently performed at venues like the Malibu Guitar Festival and The Troubadour.
He turned professional in swimming in 2019 and achieved a gold medal victory at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
He temporarily stopped making music to pursue a spot on the Australian Olympic swimming team in Paris, but didn’t make the cut and went back to his music career.
