Cobweb ending explained: What happened to Sarah?

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast with a knack for unraveling intricate narratives, I must say that “Cobweb” left me utterly spellbound. The plot twists were as chilling as the titular creature itself, leaving me on the edge of my seat throughout.

The chilling horror movie “Cobweb” that you might have missed during last Halloween’s cinema screenings is now available on Netflix in both the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In the film, eight-year-old Peter gets scared by a mysterious tapping noise emanating from within his bedroom wall. His parents, Carol and Mark, dismiss it as mere imagination on Peter’s part, but it quickly becomes evident that there is something unusual about their behavior.

They prohibited him from participating in trick-or-treating on Halloween, referring to an old case of a missing girl, and in response to Peter misbehaving at school by shoving his tormentor Brian down the stairs, they chose to confine him in the basement, hidden behind a refrigerator.

However, the sound in Peter’s wall transforms into a voice, and this voice carries a chilling message for him. Before we unravel the identity of the owner (or origin) of this voice and the family secret his parents have concealed, it is crucial to caution you that significant spoilers lie ahead.

Without beating around the bush, it’s important to understand that the strange noise from the wall is coming from Sarah, Peter’s sister. As a child, she was confined by their parents, initially in the basement and later in a pit, eventually ending up in the walls before Peter was born.

As a gamer, I find it intriguing that the game doesn’t spell out why Sarah had to resort to such extreme changes, all we know is that something was amiss with her. By the time I encountered her in the game world, Sarah possessed an uncanny ability to scale walls, boasted superhuman strength, and sported teeth sharper than a predator’s – but the mystery remains: was she born this way or did her captivity turn her into this monstrous figure? It’s left for me, the player, to unravel the truth.

Previously in the film, Mark discusses his pumpkins and explains that if one spoils, you must uproot the entire patch and begin fresh. It later transpires that this serves as a metaphor for their parenting, as when Sarah proved to be problematic, they discarded her and commenced anew with Peter.

On one occasion when Sarah managed to break free from her confinement, she was spotted by a young girl during Halloween festivities. It turned out that this girl hadn’t vanished – instead, Peter’s parents took her life and concealed her remains in their backyard to prevent her from exposing the situation surrounding Sarah’s captivity.

Grim.

Sarah manipulates Peter into believing that his parents intend to harm her, planning to kill her and later lock him up to begin anew with another child. In response, Peter chooses to act first, secretly lacing their soup with a poisonous substance, ultimately resulting in a gruesome, violent end for them both.

As she lay on her deathbed, Carol cautions Peter against freeing Sarah – however, with parents as menacing as his, why should he heed their advice? In the end, Peter disregarded her warning, releasing Sarah. It proved to be an incredibly regrettable decision. A HUGE one, indeed.

It’s clear she’s orchestrated things all along against Peter, aiming to make him carry out her vengeance on their parents. Not only does she dislike Peter, but she also plans to eliminate him. However, before taking his life, Sarah has a list of other individuals she intends to take down first.

At Peter’s residence, his tormentor, Brian, shows up accompanied by his cousin and a couple of companions, intending to take revenge on him. However, an unexpected turn of events leads to Sarah killing everyone present.

Fortunately, Peter’s instructor, Miss Devine, arrived following a distressing phone call from Peter earlier. In unison, they ultimately guided Sarah back towards the basement pit and secured her within it once more.

In a somewhat unexpected turn of events, Peter can be found residing with Miss Devine, appearing to have escaped any repercussions for the chilling act of taking his parents’ lives.

Yet, his mind is constantly tormented by Sarah’s parting words that she would break free someday, which makes him fearful of every squeak from the floorboards and every dark figure. Indeed, she appears for one last shock before the movie ends, but was Peter merely hallucinating?

Director Samuel Bodin explained to RadioTimes.com that our aim was to develop a concept similar to a familiar movie trope, where what the viewers visualize is essentially what we intended, and they understand it’s not actually the character’s imagination.

Here’s my take:

So, that’s a nice way to have to live your life.
