CNN to cut 100 jobs as it prepares to launch digital subscription products

As a long-time movie buff and media industry observer, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs in the world of news and entertainment. The latest news about CNN’s decision to cut 100 positions while focusing on digital subscription products is a stark reminder of the seismic shifts happening in the media landscape.

As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’m always keeping an eye on industry news. Lately, I’ve learned that CNN is making some significant changes to adjust to the shifting tides of media consumption. In order to expedite their development and expansion in digital subscription services, they’ve decided to let go of around 100 positions throughout the company. This move comes as the cable TV audience continues to dwindle, and it seems that CNN is determined to broaden its reach beyond this shrinking demographic.

In a detailed memo sent out on Wednesday, Mark Thompson, CEO of CNN, which is now part of Warner Bros. Discovery, shared with his team that they would be focusing more on digital products moving forward. By the end of this year, CNN.com will launch its inaugural subscription-based digital service, although no details have been disclosed regarding the content of this new offering.

Thompson, previously employed by the New York Times Co., has been dedicated to enhancing CNN’s news business as its primary revenue base, pay TV subscribers, experiences a consistent decrease. The network’s prime time television ratings have experienced a significant drop since their peak in 2020.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve noticed that CNN boasts an impressive following via its digital channels. However, their content is freely accessible at the moment, leading to lower ad revenues compared to traditional TV broadcasts. To add, watching live CNN feels like a luxury as it necessitates a pay-TV subscription, which some consumers are forgoing by opting for streaming services instead.

“Thompson stated that CNN is a highly prosperous news brand with a global presence, reaching people through various platforms. However, in order for the company to continue flourishing financially, it’s essential that we discover new revenue sources to compensate for the declining income from traditional streams.”

Thompson mentioned that the business intends to devote resources towards creating novel digital offerings that customers are prepared to purchase.

“At the moment, we are evaluating our successful digital domains such as consumer tips with CNN Underscored and health, while also exploring new and developing categories to expand upon,” Thompson expressed.

Approximately 100 CNN employees will receive notification of their employment termination on Wednesday. CNN’s global workforce comprises around 3,500 individuals.

In 2022, CNN underwent significant staff reductions following the takeover of its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. The media industry as a whole has faced financial pressures in recent times, leading companies to implement cost-cutting measures in an attempt to secure long-term profits. With an increasing number of people turning to online sources for news, traditional media outlets have been facing challenges in maintaining revenue streams.

In Thompson’s memo, I learned that Charlie Moore, the executive producer for Anderson Cooper’s show, will be overseeing all prime time programming on the channel and is expected to lead any potential revamp. Sadly, the newer additions to prime time – Kaitlan Collins, Abby Phillip, and Laura Coates – haven’t resonated with viewers who are already hooked on commentary-driven shows from MSNBC and Fox News.

Recently, CNN achieved a notable feat by hosting the initial 2024 presidential debate between President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, on the 27th of June. A massive audience of approximately 51 million viewers tuned in to this event, where they observed a less-than-stellar performance from President Biden. Despite subpar showings, he has persisted in remaining in the race, facing continued urging to withdraw.

Should the Democratic party nominees switch, the debate led by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash could be recorded as the most significant debate ever held.
