CNN anchor Jim Acosta will exit network after turning down midnight shift
CNN made Jim Acosta an offer he could refuse, and he did.
Instead of staying with the network, the seasoned reporter famous for his tough reporting on the Trump administration announced on Tuesday that he’s stepping down, preferring not to assume the position as the anchor for a live, two-hour news broadcast beginning at 12 am Eastern Time.
At the conclusion of his broadcast, Acosta expressed that he has chosen a new path. In closing, he encouraged everyone not to succumb to deception and not to let fear control them.
CNN had no immediate comment.
After CNN announced some adjustments to their daytime programming, Acosta’s decision follows suit. Starting from the 10 a.m. Eastern time slot, “The Situation Room” hosted by Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown will be where viewers have seen Acosta since last year. These changes will take place in March.
CNN Chairperson Mark Thompson offered Acosta the chance to host a revamped primetime news program during late-night hours. This show would be broadcasted live on the West Coast, replacing the reruns of shows that air during the evening hours which are now common practice among cable news stations in this region.
However, the suggested relocation is generally seen as exiling the journalist to a television niche that attracts few viewers and limited advertising revenue.

Since Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat in the November 5, 2024 general election against former President Trump, there has been a significant exodus of viewers from MSNBC, a channel owned by Comcast. The viewership for this network has decreased by 46% compared to the first ten months of the same year.
As a devoted cinephile observing the world stage, I can’t help but find myself questioning CNN’s line of thought at times. Jim Acosta, one of the most tenacious journalists reporting on the Trump administration, has often found himself in heated exchanges. A scuffle that ensued during a 2018 White House press briefing, which took place during the president’s first term, resulted in a temporary revocation of Acosta’s White House press pass. However, the court later reinstated it.
As a devoted follower, I’ve noticed some chatter suggesting that CNN might be shifting Chris Cuomo from a more prominent time slot to appease President Trump, who is notoriously vindictive towards his media critics. This move could reinforce the idea that CNN is becoming more accommodating in its coverage of Trump during his second term.
Acosta is one of your most self-reliant and fearless hosts,” wrote Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman and regular CNN guest on Thursday. “To relegate him to such a low position merely to appease the sensitive individual in the White House is pitiful. This is a failure to uphold your responsibility to scrutinize all public officials. Shame on you, CNN.
