Cloverfield Streams on Paramount+ This June—Don’t Miss the Monster!
Starting June 1st, the critter-filled blockbuster “Cloverfield,” directed by Matt Reeves, who later became known for directing “The Batman,” will be available for streaming on Paramount+. This gives subscribers the opportunity to watch one of the standout monster movies of the 21st century so far. Along with “Cloverfield,” other horror titles such as “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” and “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” will also be added to Paramount+’s streaming library.
Written by Drew Goddard and directed by Reeves as his second directorial project, Cloverfield features Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan, T.J. Miller, Mike Vogel, Odette Yustman, and Michael Stahl-David, along with others. The story revolves around a group of friends who find themselves in the thick of a massive monster assault right in the center of Manhattan, as suggested by the movie’s official summary.
Five young New York residents organize a farewell bash for their friend on an unexpectedly chaotic evening when a colossal creature, towering like a city skyscraper, invades the city. Captured through their video camera’s lens, the movie serves as a record of their struggle to endure the unimaginable, nightmarish ordeal that becomes the most bizarre and terrifying experience they have ever lived through.
Following its premiere, the film was incredibly well-received, raking in over $172 million against a somewhat limited production cost of $30 million. It was not only financially successful but also garnered critical acclaim for its innovative application of the found footage style to narrate an epic “alien invasion” tale. Nowadays, Cloverfield maintains an impressive rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and boasts a Certified Fresh label.
In a significant career milestone, Cloverfield marked a victory for director Matt Reeves. Following this success, he took on the role of director for the English-language adaptation of Let the Right One In, titled Let Me In. Subsequently, he directed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and its sequel War for the Planet of the Apes, widely acclaimed as the best installments in the latest series of the Apes franchise. In 2022, Reeves was at the helm for The Batman, a critically debated yet highly successful reboot of the DC superhero, featuring Robert Pattinson in the lead role.
Is ‘Cloverfield’ an Actual Franchise?
Ever since 2008 dropped “Cloverfield” on us, there’s been quite a buzz about whether it qualifies as a full-fledged franchise or not. Don’t get me wrong, “10 Cloverfield Lane” seems to hail from the same world, but it’s hardly the same story as the original. The monstrous design, the shift in format, and the dive into psychological thriller territory make it a unique piece that can easily stand alone on its own merits. About the only thing linking them is the title itself.
The movie titled “The Cloverfield Paradox” was an unsuccessful expansion of the franchise as it didn’t have much in common with the other two films story-wise. Instead, it was a standalone space horror film that, despite an impressive marketing campaign featuring secrecy around production, a Super Bowl TV spot, and surprise release on Netflix post-Super Bowl, quickly faded from audience memory. There are whispers that Babak Anvari of “Under the Shadow” is developing a fourth “Cloverfield” film, but concrete details remain scarce at this point.
Calling the Cloverfield series a franchise may not be entirely accurate, given the lack of clear connections between the films. Instead, it seems that the term is used as a marketing strategy to leverage the popularity of the initial successful film by including “Cloverfield” in subsequent titles without necessarily reflecting a strong narrative continuity.
