Clint Eastwood’s Heartbreaking Farewell to Gene Hackman: Unforgiven Star Dies at 95

In simpler terms, Clint Eastwood, a lifelong friend and fellow actor from the movie “Unforgiven,” gave a heartfelt tribute after Gene Hackman‘s unexpected passing at the age of 95.

In a profoundly unexpected turn of events, I discovered the partly mummified remains of the esteemed Oscar-winner Hackman and his beloved wife, Betsy Arakawa (age 64), at our grand $3.3 million estate in Santa Fe on a Wednesday afternoon. An assortment of pills lay scattered in the bathroom, yet the circumstances surrounding their untimely demise continue to elude us, leaving us all with unanswered questions.

94-year-old Eastwood, who both directed and acted opposite Hackman in the 1992 Western, issued a touching tribute to Variety, expressing his deep admiration for his cherished friend.

‘Gene was unrivaled as an actor, displaying both intense passion and innate talent without ever missing a beat. Beyond his exceptional skills on stage, he was a cherished friend whose absence I deeply feel.’

In an impressive display of acting talent, Hackman clinched his second Oscar award in the Supporting Actor category, portraying the ruthless sheriff character named ‘Little’ Bill Daggett within the movie Unforgiven.

Initially, the actor refused the role because his two daughters disapproved of him starring in numerous violent movies.

It took the best efforts of its director and star Eastwood to change his mind.

The movie, in addition to being named Best Picture and Best Director (for Clint Eastwood), also received the award for Best Film Editing, which went to Joel Cox.

Hackman won the Best Actor Oscar for the 1971 film French Connection

His most recent movie was the 2004 political-comedic film titled “Welcome to Mooseport,” marking a permanent end to his career this time around.

The couple, who had been married since 1991, were found alongside their dog.

In other places, George Takei, comedian Dara O’Briain, Francis Ford Coppola, and presenter Lorraine Kelly were just a few of the well-known figures who paid touching tributes to the star and his companion.

On Thursday morning, George, famed for portraying Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, paid a heartfelt homage to the deceased actor through a moving tribute he shared.

He stated: ‘One of the great icons of the silver screen has passed away. Gene Hackman had the ability to embody any character, and each role seemed to carry a rich life story within it. He could portray both towering figures and ordinary individuals with equal conviction, demonstrating the immense power of his acting skills. Although we will miss him dearly, his performances will continue to endure forever.’

Film director Frances Ford Coppola, who collaborated with Gene on the 1974 movie ‘The Conversation’, expressed on Threads: ‘It’s sad to lose a great artist, but we should also rejoice: Gene Hackman was an extraordinary actor, captivating and impressive in his performances and character depth. I grieve for his passing, yet I cheer for his life and the impact he made.’

Investigators fear Hackman and Arakawa may have lain dead in the house for up to two weeks.

They were discovered in a state of decay and partially mummified. It’s believed that the arid, chilly weather of the New Mexico desert may have contributed to the preservation of their skin and other tissues.

The identifications of the couple’s bodies seemed to require several hours, and it wasn’t until past midnight on Friday that the news about their passing was made public.

Hackman was found dead a mud room just off the couple’s kitchen.

The floor beside him held his sunglasses and cane, fueling conjecture that he might have passed away due to a fall.

In the bathroom of their shared space, the body of Arakawa was discovered lying on the floor. A partly spilled bottle of prescribed medication sat on a nearby counter.

Neither showed any sign of wounds. It remains unclear how they died and who died first.

It may take between four and six weeks for the findings from the autopsy to be released, as stated by local authorities.

Among their three pet dogs, it was the German Shepherd that was discovered deceased, hidden inside a closet near the bathroom where Arakawa was found.

Their two other dogs survived.

Initially, the arriving sheriff considered the deaths to be potentially suspicious, but currently, the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office has stated that they don’t think any wrongdoing occurred.

Elizabeth, Hackman’s daughter, is one of the individuals who have suggested that her father and stepmother might have perished due to carbon monoxide exposure earlier today.

Subsequently, it was found that a firefighter had been dispatched to the house following the discovery of the deceased, and upon arrival, there was no evidence of a gas leak.

Hackman, a well-known and highly productive actor in Hollywood, had a long-lasting career in the glamorous world of cinema.

In 1972, he was awarded the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of a tough police officer in the classic thriller The French Connection.

Hackman went on to win a best supporting actor Oscar in 1993 for Western classic Unforgiven.

He has appeared in numerous iconic films such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Poseidon Adventure, Superman, Mississippi Burning, Postcards from the Edge, The Firm, Get Shorty, The Birdcage, and The Royal Tenenbaums.
