Clint Eastwood’s Crime Drama With Daughter Skyrockets on Netflix: Unseen Family Dynamics
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about Clint Eastwood’s 2018 crime drama “The Mule” making it to Netflix’s top 10 this week, landing at the number 7 spot! In this gripping tale, Eastwood portrays Earl Stone, a veteran octogenarian who turns his green thumb towards a less conventional venture – becoming a drug mule transporting cocaine for an Illinois cartel. Interestingly enough, the film is inspired by the true story of Leo Sharp, a man who earned the unconventional title of the world’s oldest drug mule when he was apprehended with 200 kilograms of cocaine in Michigan, working for the Sinaloa Cartel back in 2011.
In addition to portraying the main character, Clint Eastwood both starred in and directed “The Mule”. This film marked the first time since 1997’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” that a movie by Clint Eastwood featured his real-life daughter Alison Eastwood. Interestingly, Alison plays the role of her on-screen father’s daughter, but her character Iris Stone is mostly estranged from her father Earl throughout the 116 minutes of “The Mule”. This film represents Alison Eastwood’s latest appearance on the big screen as she retired from acting in 2014. The movie also features performances by Bradley Cooper, Andy García, Laurence Fishburne, and Dianne Wiest.
The Mule Is Now A Top-10 Streaming Hit
It’s Up To Number 7 On Netflix
Starting May 2025, “The Mule” once again graced Netflix screens, having debuted in 2023. On Monday, May 12, it found itself among Netflix’s most-watched titles in the United States. This makes it the latest Clint Eastwood film to gain popularity on the streaming platform, following the sudden rise of his 2014 biopic “American Sniper” up the streaming rankings just last month.
Since the release of “The Mule”, Clint Eastwood has kept his busy directing schedule going, creating films such as “Richard Jewell”, “Cry Macho”, and “Juror #2”. There have been whispers that “Juror #2” might be Eastwood’s final film, but the director himself hasn’t provided a definitive answer to this speculation.
Our Take On The Mule Being A Netflix Hit
The True Story Of The World’s Oldest Drug Mule Has Piqued Viewers’ Interest
It’s hardly surprising that The Mule has been a popular choice among Netflix viewers this month, given the same factors that contributed to its successful box-office run when it first came out. This crime drama is one of Clint Eastwood’s finest films in the past 15 years, and its inspiration from a true story, which seems perfectly suited for adaptation by the seasoned actor-director, may well be part of the reason behind its enduring appeal.
In much the same vein as Earl Stone, the actual person Leo Sharp was a gardener who had served in the US Army during World War II, finding himself in his 80s when representatives from a Mexican drug cartel approached him. The cartel, knowing that Sharp’s business was struggling financially, took advantage of his urgent need for additional income.
Following Sharp’s arrest in 2011, The New York Times published an interview with him that served as a foundation for a movie deal when Imperative Entertainment acquired the rights to his true tale. Early in 2018, Eastwood was revealed as both director and lead actor in the project, and The Mule hit theaters a mere 11 months afterwards.
