“Clever” and “tense” Australian survival thriller that’s a “must-see” lands new UK streaming home

The survival thriller Beast of War, known for being smart and suspenseful, is now available to stream in the UK. This Australian film has earned praise for its unique combination of real historical events and classic monster-movie elements.

Set in Australia during World War II, the film by Kiah Roache-Turner follows a group of soldiers whose boat is sunk while crossing the Timor Sea, leaving them stranded and in a dangerous situation.

To make matters worse, a dangerous great white shark starts hunting in the surrounding waters. Trapped with no escape and facing threats from all sides, the team must fight to stay alive.

Despite a limited theatrical run last year, the film Beast of War is now available for streaming in the UK on Sky Cinema and NOW. You’ll need a subscription to either service: Sky Cinema costs £10 a month if you already have Sky TV, and NOW is £8.99 per month.

The survival thriller stars Mark Coles Smith and Lee Halley and has received strong positive reviews. Currently, 89% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes recommend it, based on 35 reviews.

According to RogerEbert.com, the film Beast of War is a successful movie, in part because of its short 87-minute runtime. They praised it as clever, concise, and suspenseful.

Bloody Disgusting called the film a fast-paced, exciting thriller with surprising elements of gothic horror, and praised its incredibly realistic animatronic shark. The Sydney Morning Herald simply described it as a solid, enjoyable B-movie.

The Guardian also highly praised the film, calling it a “wildly chaotic underwater adventure.” They noted that while the director drew inspiration from many different genres, he ultimately created a unique and energetic film that felt distinctly his own.

Honestly, what really got to me about this wasn’t even the shark attacks themselves, it was how easily I could picture myself in that situation. The feeling of being trapped and helpless was just as scary, if not more so, than actually seeing the shark. It messed with my head more than the jump scares did, you know?

Okay, so survival thrillers aren’t really my cup of tea, but thankfully Sky Cinema and NOW have a ton of other options! I was really excited to see they just added the historical thriller Nuremberg and the amazing comedy-drama The Ballad of Wallis Island – definitely adding those to my watchlist!

Beast of War is streaming on Sky Cinema and NOW.
