Claudia Winkleman reveals exactly how The Traitors are chosen before the first round table – as she teases banishment twist ahead of the finale
Claudia Winkleman has revealed how The Traitors are chosen on the very first show.
In the initial installment of the BBC series, the presenter, aged 52, covertly selects several participants as Traitors. Their task is to deceptively murder the remaining Loyalists during the competition, with the ultimate goal being to win the cash reward.
2021’s series featured Minah, Linda, and more recently, Armani as the suspected murderers. While it might seem like a haphazard choice at first glance, the truth is that a thoughtful selection process was meticulously planned prior to the airing of the show.
In an interview with Radio Times prior to the upcoming finale, Claudia revealed that a group of individuals determine the outcome, yet player preferences are also considered in the process.
She clarified that the decision isn’t solely hers; instead, it involves a collective effort from her, the talented production and casting crew. They work together in a room, discussing and deliberating until the final choices are made. If someone requests not to play the role of a Traitor, they wouldn’t be selected for the show.
Meanwhile, Claudia opened up about the epic banishment twist that is set to rock the final players.
In a shift from the usual pattern, players previously expelled in the previous episode will now keep their identity as Traitors or Faithful hidden.
When asked about how this would alter the game strategy, Claudia remained silent, but revealed that instincts and trust would play a crucial role in the entire process.
She expressed her enthusiasm for providing a comprehensive response, acknowledging that she might come across as somewhat bothersome. However, she’s hesitant to reveal any information due to fear. What she can share is that the situation underscores the importance of trusting one’s intuition even more. The gameplay, she suggests, offers a unique experience.
The star emphasized that ‘trust’ lies ‘at the core’ of the game, and it’s ‘crucial now’ more than ever in this series.
However, Claudia refused to give anything more away as she fears she’d ‘lose her job’.
Simultaneously, it has been shared that Claudia was left in tears due to a challenging banishing scene on the show. Furthermore, her comments suggested a highly emotional finale that brought tears to her eyes for a second time.
She teased: ‘I always cry at the end. If I didn’t, something would be off. That’s all I can say.’
The BBC has just announced that the final episode will air on January 24th.
The episode will run for 70 minutes, which is typically longer than weekly episodes of the show.
The latest final will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 8:30pm to 9:40pm.
It’s been stated that this year’s finale will deviate from past ones in the latest season.
Claudia announced at the launch that players who were expelled in the previous episode would no longer disclose if they are a Traitor or Loyalist. (Note: Loyalist is another term for Faithful)
In the course of the series, the unaware Faithfuls are trying to discover the Traitors among them. They aim to eliminate these Traitors because they must get rid of everyone who poses a threat in order to claim the prize money.
If no Traitors have been eliminated by the final round, it is those remaining who will claim the prize money.
Earlier, when the game reached its end, banished players revealed if they were Traitors or Faithful. This information served as a possible hint for the other players about the number of each group that might still be active in the competition.
However, this won’t be the case for the latest contestants due to the format change.
During their initial meeting, Claudia shared with the players: “This year, it’s going to take greater intellect than before to win the prize money. Pay close attention.
She added: “Once we reach the finale, participants won’t disclose their real identities anymore. Instead, you’ll have to trust your gut feelings to figure out if there are still Traitors left in the game.
The Traitors continues Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
