The DC Universe is expanding, gradually introducing alternate versions of its heroes and villains. Connections between different comic series are becoming more frequent, with subtle references to characters and events from across the DC line. This continues in Absolute Flash #13, which not only features a classic Flash foe but also links them to a dangerous group originally seen in Absolute Green Lantern.
I’m really excited about Absolute Flash #13! It’s got Wally West going back to the Dibney Youth Mission, which is a place with a lot of history for him. It’s where he stayed when he first got his speed and had to disappear. Now, after a tough fight with the folks behind Project Olympus – a fight where his dad seemingly vanished – he’s returned. It’s cool to see him revisiting that part of his past, especially at such a difficult time.
Wally wakes up shaken from a bad dream about his father, only to be immediately questioned by Ralph Dibney. Ralph wants to know about some government agents who were asking about Wally after he vanished around the time Heatwave showed up. Even when Wally claims he’s clueless, Ralph directly tells him he knows Wally has superpowers.
What Flash villain is teased in Absolute Flash #13?
To prove how much he trusts Wally, Ralph shows him a business card from a government agent he was asked to contact if Wally ever returned. The card identifies Hunter Zolomon from the DEO. Ralph then destroys the card, reassuring Wally that he’ll always be welcome at the mission.
The Department of Extranormal Operations, or DEO, handles reports of strange occurrences. In the Absolute Green Lantern storyline, Cameron Chase, Kari Limbo, and Simon Baz all work for the DEO. Readers of The Flash may recognize the name Hunter Zolomon.
Hunter Zolomon, who became the second Reverse-Flash known as Zoom, originally lived in a world very similar to our own (Earth-Prime). He was a highly respected FBI profiler, but a critical mistake led to the death of his mentor and father-in-law. This caused him to lose both his wife and his job. Eventually, he ended up in Keystone City, where he became friends with Wally West.
After Grodd left Zolomon unable to walk, Zolomon pleaded with Wally West to travel back in time and undo the damage. When Wally wouldn’t, Zolomon broke into the Flash Museum and tried to use the Cosmic Treadmill on his own. Surprisingly, the machine not only restored his ability to walk, but also granted him the power to manipulate time itself.
Whether Flash Hunter Zolomon will have a similar impact is still unknown. Considering he works with the questionable DEO from the Absolute Universe, it’s likely he will, but expect a surprise or unexpected turn of events.
Absolute Flash #13 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
