The Goonies is officially getting a sequel.
The family-friendly adventure comedy is among the beloved cult classics of the 1980s, and discussions about a sequel have persisted for several decades.
But now it looks like it’s really, actually happening.
According to Variety, the movie project is moving forward at Warner Bros. Steven Spielberg is set to resume his role as the producer, while Chris Columbus, the screenwriter of the initial film, will join him in a production capacity.
As a gamer, I’m excitedly anticipating the blend of familiar and innovative elements in an upcoming project. Potsy Ponciroli from Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Old Henry has been brought on board to pen the script, but unfortunately, specific plot details are still under wraps at this point.
As of now, no director has been tied up for the sequel, and there’s uncertainty regarding whether actors such as Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Josh Brolin will be back to resume their characters.
In the year 2023, Ke Huy Quan, known for his significant triumphs including “Everything Everywhere All at Once“, shared reasons behind the lack of a sequel up until that time.
At one point, he mentioned that we had many drafts, but none seemed capable of matching the greatness of the initial version.
Unfortunately, we’ve bid farewell to our ship’s captain, Dick Donner. As for a sequel to “The Goonies,” I’m unsure if that’s in the works, but should there be an opportunity, I’d relish reprising the role of Data. That film, I believe, is the one I needed for a career resurgence.
In 2021, Richard Donner, the director behind hits like The Goonies, Scrooged, Superman, and others, sadly passed away at the age of 91.
The Goonies can currently be streamed as part of a Netflix UK and Ireland subscription.
