Clash Royale Level 16 Explained: Upgrade Costs, Changes, and Progression

As a long-time Clash Royale player, I’m so excited Level 16 is finally here! It’s been almost two years since Level 15 dropped back in 2023, and Supercell is aiming to make upgrading feel even better this time around. Basically, they want to give us a new challenge to work towards once we’ve maxed everything out. Here’s what Level 16 means for how we’ll progress in the game.

Understanding the necessity of Level 16 in Clash Royale

We introduced Level 15 in 2023 to help players advance, but it didn’t work as well as we’d hoped. The new Elite Level system and Elite Wild Cards added confusion, and a lot of players felt like they hit a roadblock.

Level 16 is part of an overall improvement the team is making. They want upgrading to feel simple and rewarding for both new and long-time players. Because of this, it actually takes fewer cards to reach Level 16 than it previously did to reach Level 15.

It’s now much easier to level up, particularly between levels, and reaching Level 16 should feel smooth. The game requires fewer Elite Wild Cards – you can progress mostly with regular cards, Gold, and standard Wild Cards. If you were concerned about having to collect tons of duplicate cards, this change is a definite improvement.

Progression and requirements to Level 16 in Clash Royale

Reaching Level 16 now focuses more on collecting Gold. While you need fewer cards overall, it costs significantly more Gold to progress through the mid-levels and especially to reach Level 16, compared to how it used to be.

Gold used to be unimportant for players with fully upgraded accounts, but now it’s essential for all upgrades. If you’re already low on gold, this update won’t fix that unless Supercell introduces new ways to earn it.

Plus, we’re updating older items to fit the new system. Elite Wild Cards will become Gems, Books will turn into regular Wild Cards (or Gems if they were Books of Books), and Magic Coins will be exchanged for Gold.

How cards convert depends on your King Tower level – upgrades become more expensive as you progress. The conversion happens automatically, and even if your Wild Card storage is full, any extra cards will be used for upgrades immediately, ensuring you don’t lose anything during the process.
