Clash Royale: A detailed guide for Magic Items
On April 5th, 2021, there was a significant update for Clash Royale, introducing an established feature called “Magic Items”. This concept was initially observed in another game by the same developer, Supercell – Clash of Clans. The addition of Magic Items offers players the ability to immediately boost their card levels or swiftly open chests. In this post, I’ll walk you through an in-depth explanation of these Magic Items in Clash Royale, as well as provide tips on how best to use them.
Understanding Magic Items in Clash Royale
In the widely acclaimed mobile strategy game developed by Supercell, Clash of Clans, magical artifacts played a crucial role, similar to how they did in Clash Royale. This feature significantly simplifies gameplay for many players because it eliminates or reduces lengthy waiting periods during upgrades and chest opening.
Magic Artifacts are widely favored by many players, providing assistance in expediting the progress of your game and allowing you to focus on other areas. Any player who has reached or surpassed King Level 4 is eligible to unlock these Magic Artifacts. Note that each player’s inventory capacity for Magic Artifacts may differ depending on their King Level.
If you purchase magical items from the store, there’s a chance they may exceed the set limit. Once these items receive significant enhancements, they can provide a substantial advantage in close combat situations. You can obtain them through various means such as chests, Pass Royale, Trophy Road, Challenges, Global Tournaments, and Shop Offers.

Wild Cards
As a passionate player, I often find myself in need of leveling up my cards. When I’m close to completing the upgrade for a specific card but am lacking a few required cards, that’s when Wild Cards become my savior!

Instead of using your already-unlocked cards, these ones can serve as substitutes. However, their availability is contingent on your King Level and the rarity of the Wild Card. You can acquire them from Chests, the Trophy Road, Special Challenges, Shop deals, and both Free and Pass Royale rewards.
The most convenient method to acquire it is via Pass Royale, which offers an abundance of Wild Cards and could be sufficient for nearly half of an upgrade’s requirements. Royal Chests often contain Wild Cards, and you are certain to receive Wild Cards from the Legendary’s King Chest.
To Note:
- If you are near the storage cap and collect a stack of Wild Cards, you can still receive the wild cards over their storage cap. But if you have maxed your inventory and collect a stack of Wild Cards, then the cards will be automatically converted to a random card of the same rarity.
- If that random card is already maxed, then you will receive the Gold equivalent, similar to how it is now when you receive cards for any of their maxed cards.
Maximum Wild Card Limits at each Arena
Here’s a table displaying the required number of Arena/Wild cards organized by King Level, grouped according to their rarity:
This way, you can see at a glance how many cards of each rarity you need for each level in the game.
King Level | Common | Rare | Epic | Legendary |
---|---|---|---|---|
King Level 4 | 50 | 20 | 2 | 1 |
King Level 5 | 50 | 20 | 4 | 1 |
King Level 6 | 50 | 20 | 4 | 1 |
King Level 7 | 100 | 20 | 10 | 1 |
King Level 8 | 200 | 50 | 10 | 1 |

King Level 14 & 15 | 5000 | 1250 | 200 | 20 |
Common
- Maximum Number allowed: 50-5000
The type of Wild Cards utilized for enhancing Common cards can be difficult to accumulate due to the necessity of having a large number of them for upgrades. The quantity of collectible Wild Cards is determined by the arena level you’re currently in.
Rare
- Maximum Number allowed: 20-1000
In-game items known as Wild Cards are utilized to enhance the abilities of Rare cards. However, with a total of 200 Wild Cards to gather, it can be quite challenging for free-to-play players. The number of collectible Wild Cards you can amass depends on the Arena level you’ve reached.
Epic
- Maximum Number allowed: 2-200
In simpler terms, Wild Cards serve as enhancements for Epic cards. The number of Wild Cards collectibles you can amass is determined by the battlefield arena you’re currently in.
Legendary
- Maximum Number allowed: 1-20
In this game, wild cards function as upgrades for legendary cards. The number of wild cards you can gather is determined by the arena you’re currently in. Up until Hog Mountain (Arena 10), players are restricted to having a maximum of one card as an upgrade.
Elite Wild Cards
- Maximum Number allowed: 400,000

The latest update, known as the Card Evolution, has incorporated Elite Wild Cards into the game. These cards are a special type of Wild Cards, providing a pathway for progression from Level 14 to Level 15. You can acquire these elite cards through excess cards at Level 14, in-game shop offers, or by completing Special Event Challenges.
The amount of common, uncommon, or rare Cards you receive from excess Shards is determined by the Card’s rarity. Here’s a breakdown of how many cards fall under each category:
– Common Cards
– Uncommon Cards
– Rare Cards
- Common: 1000 Cards
- Rare: 250 Cards
- Epic: 40 Cards
- Legendary: 4 Cards
- Champion: 4 Cards
Book of Cards
These magical artifacts grant you the exact amount of cards necessary for a level upgrade. However, keep in mind that these upgrades aren’t complimentary; you’ll need Gold to afford the desired upgrade. The book’s true worth lies in its ability to elevate cards from Level 12 to Level 13. This is particularly advantageous when you’ve recently boosted a card to Level 12 and are eager to immediately advance it to Level 13.

In essence, the most effective approach is to employ these magical books on units or structures that take considerable time to fully upgrade. These items, known as Books of Cards, are stronger than Wild Cards, but you can utilize only one at a time. You can acquire these Books of Cards through shop deals and they are accessible in the Free Royale.
To Note:
- The maximum limit does not change at the King levels.
- If you try to collect a Book and you are over the limit, you’ll get a Warning for the same.
- If you proceed, your book will be converted to its overflow value.
- All the books give 100 Gems for overflows.
Book of Books

- Maximum Number allowed: 1
The Book of Cards could be viewed as a general depiction. Unlike it, the Book of Books is all-encompassing and usable on any unit or building, regardless of rarity. It’s important to note that in order to enhance a specific card, one must possess the necessary Gold.
Magic Coin

- Maximum Limit allowed: 1
In simpler terms, the Magic Coin collaborates with the Book of Cards or Book of Books. The Book of Cards or Book of Books provides the necessary cards for an upgrade, whereas the Magic Coin supplies the needed gold to accomplish that upgrade.
This feature allows you to obtain a card upgrade to the next level without spending any of your own gold. To reap the greatest benefit, consider using the Magic Coin to elevate a Level 12 card to Level 13. This is the final and most expensive upgrade level, amounting to 100,000 Gold.
To Note:
- The maximum limit does not change at the King levels.
- If you try to collect a Magic Coin and you are over the limit, you’ll get a Warning for the same.
- If you proceed, your Magic Coin will be converted to its overflow value.
- All the books give 100 Gems for overflows.
Chest Key

- Maximum Number allowed: 5-10
Currently, Chest Keys are not considered as crucial. Typically, it takes about 24 hours for one to open, and not all of us gamers have our inventory filled with 24-hour chests (Legendary Chests and Mega Lightning Chests).
Regardless, this Magic Item is worth keeping because it allows you to open any chest instantly without using gems. You can acquire Chest Keys through Special Challenges, special shop offers, or both Free and Pass Royale. Any extra Chest Keys are converted into 100 Gold.
Alternatively, the Magic Item is valuable since it enables you to open any chest immediately without spending gems. You can get Chest Keys from Special Challenges, special shop offers, or both Free and Pass Royale. Any additional Chest Keys are converted into 100 Gold.
Lastly, the Magic Item is a keeper because it lets you open any chest instantly without using gems. You can grab Chest Keys through Special Challenges, special shop offers, or both Free and Pass Royale. Any extra Chest Keys are converted into 100 Gold.
Maximum Chest Key Limits at each Arena
Here is the table showing the Arena Chest Key limits for each King Level in Clash Royale:
King Level | Arena Chest Key Limit |
---|---|
4 to 8 | 5 |
9 | 6 |
10 | 7 |
11 | 8 |
12 | 9 |
13 to 15 | 10 |
Card Boost Potion

- Maximum Limit allowed: 8
As a dedicated gamer, let me share some exciting news about an intriguing Magic Item: the Card Boost Potion! This potion grants your card a temporary level boost, making it equal to your King Tower Level for a full hour – much like the Level Boost from Pass Royale. However, keep in mind that these elusive potions aren’t easy to come by; you can only snag them from Special Challenges or special Shop offers.
Wild Shard

- Maximum Limit allowed: 6
Just as Elite Wild Cards were presented along with other cards, so too did the introduction of Wild Fragments occur. These fragments function similarly to Evolution shards and are interchangeable with any card you require. They can be utilized together as well. Wild Fragments can be acquired at no cost in the Shop, Events, or Challenges.
In this manual, you’ll find all information about Magic Items in Clash Royale. If any new items are introduced with the upcoming release, I’ll make sure to update this list accordingly. For now, however, the details provided here will stay consistent.
