Citadel: Diana season 1, episode 4 recap and review: "The Zanis"

As a long-time fan of gripping, character-driven spy dramas, I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying the unfolding saga of Edo and Diana in Citadel: Diana season 1. Each episode brings new layers to these complex characters, and the power struggle within Manticore is as intriguing as it is dangerous.

In Citadel: Diana’s season 1, episode 4, while Ettore is arguing that his strategy is superior, Edo is covertly plotting to seize control of Manticore. The stage is now set for the formal power struggle to unfold.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Citadel: Diana season 1, episode 4.

Following Ettore’s decisive action in the last episode, Edo found himself compelled to take action as well. However, this move resulted in his expulsion from the family, which implies a new power struggle is about to unfold.

In the meantime, Diana must find a way to remain calm following her abduction by the Zanis. Will Edo arrive in time to save her, or has her fate already been sealed?

Edo’s past is explored in Citadel: Diana

In the fourth episode of Citadel: Diana, season 1, we delve deeper into Edo’s history, exploring his bond with Cecile. It appears they shared a connection in the past, but circumstances shifted as Cecile was groomed to assume control. Their parents manipulated events, forcing Cecile to distance herself from her feelings for Edo.

It’s intriguing to watch the evolution of this connection, and it’s equally captivating to notice that everyone apart from Edo has consistently acted in Manticore’s best interests over time.

In the last episode, Edo shared with Diana that he discovered his connection to Manticore when he was 19 years old. This wasn’t his initial plan, but it’s the path life has taken him on. However, he doesn’t want to be a perpetual servant of Manticore France for all eternity.

As a passionate admirer, I must confess that the demolition of Piazza Duomo stirs within me an anger towards Manticore. This seemingly strategic move to undermine Citadel was indeed a distraction, but at what cost? It claimed the lives of innocents, a price Edo never consented to pay. Now, it appears we are witnessing the reason behind Edo and Diana’s compatibility. Their shared moral compass in this world is evident, reinforcing my belief that they truly belong together.

Edo works to get Diana out of prison

Following his dismissal from the agency, Edo discovers that Diana is in jail. Instead of attempting to rescue her, he decides to go visit her. His intention isn’t to save her, but rather to inform her about all the events that have unfolded thus far. This action serves as a clear demonstration of his feelings for her.

Well, he decides that he needs to get her out. Diana explains that the prisoner in the cell next to her is the Citadel agent who killed Edo’s brother. Ettore always told Edo that the agent was dead, but now it’s clear everyone is lying to him. The only person he can trust is Diana, and yet their relationship was built on a lie to start with!

In this latest gaming session, I’ve noticed a deeper side to my character – he’s not about causing pain, but there’s a contradiction. It’s high time we addressed this inconsistency, and Edo’s pushing Ettore towards conflict with Manticore France. Yet, we must heed Diana’s strategy first. I’m reluctant, but I understand that this is the path to uphold my other son’s legacy.

Diana wants to become a triple agent in Citadel: Diana

Diana intends to infiltrate Manticore France, where she will work undercover for Ettore as a double agent. Since this new role makes her a triple agent, that’s how I see it. Diana shares with Ettore that she may gain access to Manticore HQ, enabling her to acquire the genuine half of the weapon.

Once more, Diana demonstrates her knack for staying one move ahead. She’s adept at quick-wittedness, even during high-pressure scenarios. It’s no surprise that while confined in a prison, knowing she might endure torture or death, she finds time to engage in deep thought.

Ettore discovers that Diana and Edo indeed have a scheme, leaving him with no other option than to reintegrate Edo into the group’s affairs. As Edo’s technology is compatible with his biological information, Ettore must find a means to surrender Diana and Edo to the authorities. By revealing that he possesses both parts of the weapon, Ettore believes this will accomplish his goal. Since Cecile can’t expose her half as a forgery, this puts Wolfgang in a position where he has no choice but to rely on Ettore. This trust allows Ettore to reclaim an equal standing in Manticore decision-making processes.

The strength of an individual is often determined by those they are surrounded by. While Ettore holds a part of the plan in his mind, Edo and Diana possess other pieces. Just as two halves make a whole weapon, it’s only by uniting Ettore, Edo, and Diana that the Italian plan can be successfully executed.

Planting seeds of uncertainty can be just as important as any other step in ensuring a plan succeeds. Ettore advises Wolfgang that there’s an issue with Cecile’s part of the weapon, which could set them up for a power play, pitting Cecile and Wolfgang against each other.

This episode provided an insightful peek into Edo’s past and his beliefs. We discovered far more about him in this installment than we have in any previous one. The character development in Citadel: Diana, particularly for our primary characters, has been commendable. Despite some initial shortcomings, Citadel has addressed and improved upon them under the skillful hands of Diana.

Citadel: Diana is available to stream on Prime Video.
