Having grown up during the golden age of gospel and soul, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing some truly exceptional artists perform, and Cissy Houston was undoubtedly one of them.
Cissy Houston, a gospel artist who won two Grammys and was the mother of the renowned pop star Whitney Houston, passed away on Monday. At the time of her death, she was 91 years old.

According to the Associated Press, Pat Houston stated that the matriarch – a performer known for collaborating with Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin – passed away on Monday morning at her residence in New Jersey. She was being cared for under hospice services due to Alzheimer’s disease, and was surrounded by loved ones during her final moments.
Pat Houston stated that Mother Cissy has been a powerful and influential presence in our lives. A woman with a deep faith and unwavering beliefs, she held dear her family, ministry, and community. Her seven-decade-long career in music and entertainment will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
